"The mother of the boy at the centre of the latest Michael Jackson sexual misconduct allegations was involved in a previous contentious lawsuit in which she was paid a substantial sum of money.

"Janet Arvizo, 34, alleged that in 1998, she and two of her sons, including Gavin, the 13-year-old who has accused Jackson of improper behaviour, were beaten by department store security guards after the Arvizos left the store with clothes that had not been paid for.

"She also alleged security guards sexually assaulted her in the store car park. Court records show that in November, 2001 JC Penney Co paid Janet Arvizo's family $US137,500 ($191,600) to settle the lawsuit.

"A month before that windfall, Arvizo filed for divorce from her husband, David, whom she accused of spousal abuse and child cruelty. Police charged David Arvizo, who pleaded no contest.

"But David Arvizo's lawyer, Russell Halpern, alleged yesterday the mother had lied about the abuse and had convinced her three children to support her allegations."
