Yep, sometimes you just get it right the first time.

I have a client and friend who, among other physical ailments, is going deaf. It's been quite a while since he's been able to enjoy television- to watch it, he has to crank the volume up to a point his wife, his dogs, and his cat all find intolerable, so he's pretty much given up on it.

I saw an inexpensive solution immediately, and so proceeded to impliment it thusly: I bought two inexpensive pairs of stereo headphones, three 6' stereo extension jacks, and a stereo splitter jack. The first extension jack was plugged directly into the jack on front of the tv, automatically cutting off the external speakers. The splitter was plugged in to the end of the first jack, and the other two extension jacks were plugged into the outlets. His headphones were plugged in, and the sound was adjusted at the tv so he could clearly hear it. I selected HER headphones because they have their own volume control. When we plugged hers in, she was able to adjust the volume down so she could hear her tv shows in "real stereo", which she got a real kick out of.

Problem solved for the cost of about thirty bucks in parts and two minutes in setup.

I got a call from them today- it seems last night was one of their big weekly tv evenings. He was so happy it sounded like he would have cried if he wasn't walking on the ceiling. He'd had the first enjoyable tv evening with his wife in almost two years- he'd been able to hear every word that was said. And she was ecstatic too, because she got her stereo experience, and it was good. And the dogs and cat were happy because they heard nothing at all.

I admit it. I'm good. I'm VERY good.

I'm a semi-retired indie working out of my home. Been in business for three years now.

5. ah. question for you (if you don't mind)
Is there an easy way to hook a turntable up to the computer so I can copy lps to cd or do I need to buy a seperate cd recorder for the "stereo"? (does anybody call them that or use them anymore - its all "entertainment systems" in the ads)

6. Simple to do
Hook the turntable into an amplifier (unless it already has standard L-R out jacks). The amp or turntable goes into the computer sound card- a standard conversion jack is available almost anywhere.

A cd drive for your computer is inexpensive these days- you can play music directly from your computer (back out to the stereo amp, then to your speakers. You can use one of several "ripper" programs to rip the cd music to your hard drive.

I don't know about anybody else, but I still call it Stereo.

7. so if I go to the store and ask for
a standard conversion jack to do this, will they know what I want? This is where I get lost: "...goes into the computer sound card." Is there a jack or port or whatever for this? I don't really see anything like that on the back of my tower...

9. Everything is standardized
Tell the salesman what you're trying to do and he/she will know what is needed.

As for the sound card, it looks something like this (you just need to look for the plugin ports on the left side). If it's there you will see it from the back of the computer.

12. Cool - thanks
and I may be back - that was a project I originally had in mind when we bought the computer and I have yet to figure out the music stuff - of course I can play cd's and the kids have figured out how to copy them but have yet to try recording the lps, or god, the tapes! or even downloading new music (of course we have very slow dial up with lots of disruptions so that may be why nobody has tried that yet)

So theoretically I could record off the radio as well, if it was going through the amp that was connected to the computer?

I know all this would be easy with a regular cd recorder but we bought our fancy player for the stereo right before the recordable ones went mainstream...and I am too cheap to replace that until it dies - so some kind of Rube Goldberg wiring project all over the living room sounds like what will happen instead!

I thank you muchly!

8. fantastic
As someone whose hearing is shot because of playing in bands for a long time, I've done this as well, especially the headphone thing.

Pat yourself on the back; you done good:)

Besides cutting through the tinnitis, I've always just liked the immediacy and clarity of 'em. I rarely even use my Bose cabinet speakers any more...
