The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Thu 1/19/06)
it is at moments after I have dreamed

it is at moments after i have dreamed
of the rare entertainment of your eyes,
when(being fool to fancy)i have deemed

with your peculiar mouth my heart made wise;
at moments when the glassy darkness holds

the genuine apparition of your smile
(it was through tears always)and silence moulds
such strangeness as was mine a little while;

moments when my once more illustrious arms
are filled with fascination, when my breast
wears the intolerant brightness of your charms:

one pierced moment whiter than the rest

-turning from the tremendous lie of sleep
i watch the roses of the day grow deep.

e.e. cummings

*****************************

I just escaped from "the tremendous lie of sleep" a few minutes ago and stumbled down the stairs to my office to drop this tender little e.e. cummings morsel out there for you guys to savor at your leisure. Hope you had a good night's sleep and have a better day today than you had yesterday, even if yesterday was good.

1. I especially love the last three lines...
and I hope that you also have a day
filled with fascination...

2. Thanks RL
I always recite "I Thank You God" before I get out of bed in the morning.

How are you doing today?

4. Beautiful.
Far more beautiful than the clumsy wrest from bed that I executed, this morning. :P I'm ready for a nap, already.

6. My dear RetroLounge....
Indeed I did have a very good night's sleep.......

It is always a pleasure to find your daily poems....

Even when I don't understand them too much, like this one!

Although I do get the last 3 lines.......I think......

Anyhow, I thank you!

And my wish for you is the same as yours for me: ...have a better day today than you had yesterday, even if yesterday was good.

8. "the tremendous lie of sleep?"
As in laying down? Or telling a fib?
(oooh - can I say "FIB" to you?)

I'm presuming lie as in fib, with which I disagree.
I believe that our dreams reveal our deepest thoughts and yearnings, even those which are hidden from our conscious selves. Therefore, the tremendous lie (fib) is in waking, not dreaming.

PS - I dream of Oostberg. :loveya:

9. I see it the same way...
Sleeping takes me away from everything and makes reality go away (usually), until I wake up, and wham! there it is again...

New Slogan: "Come to Oostberg! Where dreams are made real!"

:hi:
