Can someone please suggest some good music...I'm out of the loop.
I need some new music to try out. It's getting stale listening to the same old artists. I need new stuff. Most recently, I've found "Jupiter One." Very nice sound. They're my current crush. Can someone suggest something new?

My current music collection includes, but is not limited to:

HUM
Sparta
At the Drive In
Deftones
Big Wreck
Dovetail Joint
Foo Fighters
Jupiter One
Dancing for Architecture
Spoon
Tool
Ben Folds Five/Ben Folds
Sunny Day Real Estate
Goodbye Blue Monday
The Clash
Pumpkins
James Taylor
Frank Sinatra
Elton John
Michael Jackson
Jamie Cullum
Harry Conick Jr.

Take it and run. Anything will do. If I can find it on iTunes, I'll check it out.

1. My new favorite bands are Carbon Leaf & Skeleton Key
You can download some of their songs for free from their websites. Skeleton Key is an actual junkyard band because the percussionist has put together a system of everyday items to use. Carbon Leaf is a decent rock band with some celtics undertones.

Just google the band names and you'll find their music!

5. Hey Thanks.

I listened to some of the music that you listed. Skeleton Key is RAW man. The Four songs on their website don't give a completely accurate account of what their music is about, I'm sure, but it was interesting. ALmost too complicated and muddy at times though.

Carbon Leaf I think I could get used to. Not bad. Sounds like it would be a decent live show, from listening to some of the live recordings. They seem fairly talented and their sound is soothing. Like the They Might Be Giants cover too. LOL.

6. Skeleton Key's album definately has some great songs on it
I ended up downloading the album off of Napster.

If you have a Salon membership, they have a daily audiophile download and I usually download them all and check out if there is something interesting I might like.

Also try:

Pretty Girls Make Graves
Desaparecidos
Propagandhi (Especially their new album)
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

13. Whoa, forgot about them.
Mars Volta is nuts. I LOVE that sound. In fact, funny you say that, my buddy who also listened to ATDI told me to check them out. Sparta was just the natural progression FROM ATDI. Volta's actually better than either of them.....by quite some measure.

"And you will know us..." is a band I've checked out recently too. Ultra talented group. I like their stuff too. I missed out on going to their small venue show in Minneapolis about 6 months ago due to my wife being pregnant. Wish I could have seen it. I heard it was great.

I'll check the rest of those out as well. Thanks.

15. TMV is my favourite band...
And they took that spot away from ATDI, haha. I consider them the holy trinity (along with Sparta) of punk/post-punk/post-hardcore/whatever-the-fuck-you'd-call-them, haha.

Sparta actually kinda reminds me of older ATDI sometimes. Like In/Casino/Out-era ATDI.

61. I'm actually, genuinely amazed with TMV.
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 11:59 PM by WeRQ4U
La Via, La Viaquez just absolutely blows my mind. It's just driving and thick and then just settles into that Latin slowdown and ends in some weird bird repeat. I'm actually a fan of the melody that it has, contrary to some of the prog "purists." In fact, I could do without some of the algorythm shit and plodding electronic garbage during some of the songs...it's OK, but it's not my favorite. (Like the first 5 minutes of Miranda). That's evident of why I like the specific bands that I do from that genre... less brain and more heart.

63. Check out the track (not the album) "Frances The Mute"
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 12:33 AM by primate1
It has 4 minutes of noise at the beginning, but once the song kicks in, I think it's my favourite song by them. "Cassandra Gemmini" (the whole 30-minute piece) is fucking amazing as well.

I think the "heart" and melody comes from their strong punk background. I'm not a big prog fan in general (I don't know much, but what i've heard ahs come nowhere close to being as great as I think TMV are), so I think that's what hooked me, the combination of prog and punk.

Check out The Lost Patrol. Especially their "Songs In The Key of Resistance" album. They sound nothing like Refused, but it's Dennis' acoustic-based side project. "In The Key Of Resistance" is one of my personal favourite albums.

Since ATDI is on your list. If for some reason you haven't, then I recommend.

It also seems you like well crafted pop music. Seek out some old Weezer if you're not very familiar with them.

In fact, I've seen the video on Sigur Ros' website. Don't ask me how. Maybe I ran across it on Epitonic.com. They sometimes have some good stuff.

Godspeed wasn't my bag...I felt like I was missing something, like I wasn't smart enough to listen to it.

That video from Sigur Ros is moody. I loved the tune, but wasn't all that high on the vocals. Too bird-like or something. You know? Not bad though.

42. Your music tastes run very similar to mine
with the exception of Michael Jackson. :puke:

I like great, sparkly pop tunes with "hooky" melodies and great musicianship and vocals. If it doesn't have all of these components, I'm sorry but I'm just not interested.

Have you investigated:

Moonpools & Caterpillars "Lucky Dumpling" - hard to find (they broke up many years ago, but this album is a gem, and every track on it is rock solid).

The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" - kinda weird, but absolutely awesome from start to finish.

Veronica Mars Television Soundtrack - Lots of great modern pop tunes by such groups as the Faders, the Dakotas, and the Delays.

Air "Moon Safari" - You hear tracks from this one on CSI and Alias all the time. It's a little more techno-electronica oriented than the above albums, but it's a modern-day classic.

Just check out some of these groups/albums on iTunes. I'm pretty sure you'll find something you love.

Josh Ritter is a bit of a Taylor/Dylan combination

You might like New Pornographers as they've been compared to Spoon. Personally I like the NP a lot more.

If you like Tool, check out harder bands like System Of A Down. You could try Sleater-Kinney, too.

If you like Ben Folds and Elton John, try Gavin DeGraw.

Not a whole lot of bands out there now similar to the Pumpkins and another fave of mine, Stone Temple Pilots. Try Worlds Apart by Trail of Dead. You could give female rockers like Jerra, Tuuli and the The Donnas a chance.

go to http://radiokeneally.com/playing.php and check him out-

the streaming is free and hey- listen for more an a little bit... if you're not so hot on what you hear just now stick it out and you'll hear something that makes you go "DAMN!".

He was a guitarist in Frank Zappa's later band and he's a wonderful pianist and awesome guitarist... His compositions are incredibly varied and he knows his shit.

Andy Partridge (XTC) once said "Mike Keneally is so good it makes me spit!"

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did/do... be forewarned- it ain't a specific genre... it's just brilliant music...

60. I hear everything in Keneally's music-
XTC, Todd, Zappa... too many to name here...

one minute it sounds like Jeff Beck the next it sounds like Queen... go figure.

and it's not like he changes it up just to prove he's clever, no it somehow serves the music... again, go figure....

hope you enjoy it!
