So is it weird that a single, straight male like me gets unusually excited
by new cooking utensils like pots and pans, kitchen knives, etc.?

Hell, it's not like I even cook for other people, just me. All my friends live at least 45 minutes away, so they never get to eat my cookin'.

Just askin' is all :P

1. The knives thing could be a wee bit disturbing.
A sadism thing, perhaps. :scared:

2. Nope
Kitchen gadgets are the best!
Here's my favorite, the Ulu:

This is by far the best kitchen slicing/chopping knife I have ever seen. It works on everything!

4. They sell one at Ikea that I'm going to pick up next time I'm there
It's a knife like that with a chopping block that's dished in the middle to match the curve of the knife. . . very cool. (the knife is all stainless though, no wooden handle).

Men have to eat, too. If you have to cook for youself you might as well enjoy the process and the product. :9

18. Answered my concern. In that case, I do, too.
I recently bought a pair of santoku style knives. I shopped for days for them, hitting every kitchenware store in northwest Austin, checking out reviews on the Internet.

I was actually disappointed when I bought them, since I didn't have to search anymore.

I bought Calphalon Katana knives, btw. Great bolsters!

I love 'em

The only one I'm missing to complete my collection is the Nakiri (vegetable cleaver/slicer).

27. Hehehe, I'm very careful with washing.
I use a sponge to do it, so even if it slips I have an inch of sponge between that edge and my fingers :P.

I also wash by putting the edge facing away from me and moving the knife toward me across the sponge or the sponge toward the edge of the knife.

I have yet to even slice the sponge washing them that way.

29. I do that, too. But now and then I'll get a slight stain down in the
marbling, and I have to scrub a little harder. Then I get nervous! :-)

Usually then I use a Dobie pad, and scrub only on the outstroke, away from the blade. Fear is good. Fear makes me cautious!

30. What you do when that happens is get
some Bar Keepers Friend liquid (a very, very mild abrasive cleanser), put the knife with it's edge against a chopping block, and just use your fingers to rub the cleaner into the blade, the edge is against a surface so your fingers can't get to it, so you can get aggressive with the scrubbing action.

Works like a charm.

Seriously though, I meet most any definition of "big strong guy" and I don't see anything even remotely un-macho about liking to cook.

I didn't get this tall by not eating, that's for sure, and the old work ethic line "any job worth doing is worth doing right" is just as true today as it ever was. Being a good cook is its own reward.

16. Consumer Reports didn't think much of the Dyson
Thought it overpriced for its average performance, IIRC.

Apparently Dyson's "we're the only one that maintains the suction" ads aren't worth much.

17. Does CU like ANY of the bagless?
After 3 bagless vaccuums (and about $400), we gave up and went bag to old-fashioned bag vacs.

19. I'd have to look it up...
I just remember glancing at the article and noting that the Dyson didn't rate so well. The other thing I noticed was that Eureka (the brand we have!) ranked pretty high.

If you like, I can find that issue tonight, and PM you tomorra.

I :loveya: mine. I have one like the one at the link, not the bagless. Bagged vaccums are better for people with allergies and bags are cheaper than filters.

I wish I had known -- all those years of chopping onions with a paring knife :scared: <--shudder

Also, one good large frying pan and one good omelet pan have also made a big difference.

14. I love cooking
I recently moved and my favorite housewarming gift (one I bought myself) is a chef's knife. Great knife. I've been gradually accumulating new pots and pans and utensils. I bought a small skillet I really like too.

Long ago, I used to get excited by the "manly" power tools-hardware store thing, but now it's kitchen stuff.

Does your lust for cooking implements include grilling tools? If so, you have nothing to worry about. Not that you should be worried in the first place :)

It's a phallic thing, and a matter of "pride" shall we say.
