I'm sorry but after deliberating this issue, ELO stays above the Beatles |
|
on my list of all-time favorite bands.
There was some debate with ProfessorGAC and asthmaticeog about changing the order that would put the Beatles (currently #10) above ELO (#7) on my list of 10 all-time favorite bands.
I have put much thought into making this change especially in light that asthmaticeog was going to post negative things about my #3 band, which is Yes.
This was not an easy decision. The Beatles are a legendary band with music that will span the generations and will always be considered the band that started a musical revolution. However these are not the only factors that I use when making deliberations as to where a band places in my top 10 all-time favorites even if they actually make the cut. For me it's about the music and how it has affected me profoundly throughout my music listening lifetime. For me, my music is my memories, my mood and sometimes my lifeline. The band may not be the most skilled musicians out there (hence why Green Day is #4) but there is something about that music that affects me in away whether it's cheering me up on a sad day, putting an extra lilt in my step or just memories of my lifetime.
ELO's bonus came from two factors: First and probably the biggest ranking was the fact that ELO's "Out of the Blue" was the first album (and that was in Vinyl) I ever bought and thus started me down the path of wanting to own music. I figured I have about 750 Vinyl & CDs in my collection (I know, rather small for some) but it was that album that started me on my journey. ELO also receives bonus points because they are some of the earliest music I remember hearing on the radio since at that time they were quite popular. The Beatles were pretty much broken up when I started getting turned on to music (which was around 1974 give or take) and ELO was quite popular on AM Rock Radio (WKBO out of Harrisburg PA). ANd then there is a added special bonus for what I consider one of the best sides of any record out there - side #3 of Out of the Blue thusly labeled "Concerto for a Rainy Day". I'll listen to that combo anytime I have a sad day it's so musically in-tune with who I am.
So unfortunately, the Beatles will not move above ELO in my list of all-time favorite bands and yes, I expect fallout from this decision. But it's my list - one that I've been cultivating since 1974 (you don't even want to know what I considered the best bands back in 1974 but it didn't include Led Zeppelin (that came around 1977) but it did include Steve Miller Band!)
However in light of this deliberation I have moved Beatles up one on my scale. I actually decided that David Bowie deserved a better ranking of #9 (they're now #6), ELO stays the same at #7 and I put the Beatles at #8. King Crimson moves down to #9 and Jethro Tull rounds out the list at #10.

I mean with over 750 albums & cds, I probably have close to 100-150 different artists. Beatles have made the 'Creme de la Creme' in my book!!

20. That's 'cause you're just a kid... |
|
and don't know any better. The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix changed music in ways that you don't appreciate because you didn't know what it was like without them. And where's Joni Mitchell? In fact, no women at all? But hey, I love Yes, saw them before Fragile came out.
BTW, which King Crimson are you talking about? I saw them after Bruford joined, about the time they recorded the USA album. I like ITCOTCK best, but they only played one song from it (I wonder why?:sarcasm:). I even have McDonald and Giles. And of course this leads to ELP, but I won't go any farther on that issue.
Bill
Mods - the spell check doesn't recognize "Jimi". This is a real problem.

Remember, my music choices are based solely on the impact of the music to society as a whole but the impact of the music to me as a person. ELO has just had more impact than the Beatles.
But consider this - I have about 150-200 different groups on CD & Vinyl so making the top 10 is extremely special!!

just their standing in my musical world - a world in which ELO has meant more to me than the Beatles have!

33. This post reminds me of an assignment I had once... |
|
I was taking a Gen Ed music class and the professor told us to go home and write down our top 10 favorite songs of all time, and why. I've written 20 page literature reviews with less trouble, in my 4 years of undergrad, it was one of the most difficult assignments I've had to do. Funny thing is, I can't remember the list I compiled. I think if I tried to re-create it, my head would explode.
So I understand the difficulty one must go through when compiling a top 10 list!

37. What is your critical judgment of Steve Miller as a musician? |
|
When I saw him in concert two things struck me (and I am so NOT a musician):
1. He is a wonderful musician 2. He knows how to lead his group
They were all just so tight and looked like they were so enjoying themselves.
