I had one who spent over two hours on the phone helping me with what I originally thought was a problem with my ISP, only to finally find out it was a Winsock issue. He was the most patient, helpful IT person I'd ever dealt with.

Some things seem so simple it is really hard to understand how someone can't "get it." I have received the same treatment from calculus professors. It is so easy for them that they get pissed when you don't get it. They assume it is like walking.

15. No. But Rude & Condescending IT people are more noticed. |
|
I've found that helpful IT people are taken for granted, while the rude and condescending ones get all of the gossip.
For instance, one IT person in my department is just wonderful. She's smart and kind to the computer illiterate. She tries to take the time to teach people small things, if they want to learn. No one talks about her; they take her for granted.
On the other hand, another IT person is so condescending I can't stand it. He likes speaking really quickly with technical language and then acting like you're an idiot for not knowing about some processor thingie or software language. :grr:

|
...But, I look at IT a bit differently than most I guess. We're very much in the customer support business, and most forget that. The people who make the product our company sells, the people who market that product, etc, etc. Those are our customers. Sometimes, I'll set up a "bogus" problem just to QC how our help-desk treats customers.

Come on, this isn't rocket science or brain surgery! It's fucking simple!
So yeah, we get a little tetchy at times. When you deal with someone who is obviously intelligent, but still can't get it... well it's frustrating. And so we are rude and condescending. Nothing personal :)

include being adept at manipulating little electronic boxes! ;-)
In my profession (which shall remain confidential)the average IT-type person would probably require at least 10-12 hours of serious study to even complete the simplest of tasks. I'm not kidding.

most times, people will call you and they want you to fix their problems AND be nice. Then, when that's done, they say "oh, by the way, I've noticed another problem blah blah blah can you help me out with that?" No, get off my fucking phone. ;)
Oftentimes, in IT, being nice can get you in a lot of trouble because people get the idea that you have nothing better to do but make sure every little goddamn thing on their computer is perfect.
I had to get out of the business because it started to get to me. Well, that and it didn't pay dick and because people who got paid WAAAAAAAY more than me called ME for help on EVERYTHING. At some point, the irony became too much.

...so I can push you out of the way before you do something stupid.
The funniest IT person I ever worked with was a woman who had to be one of the most disheveled and rude people I've ever met. She'd actually move people in their chairs just like that, and she wasn't joking around. All the women in the office hated her, but the men and the bosses didn't mind her so much because they thought she was sort of sexy.
Ouside of work she'd never talk. At lunch she'd sit outside in her car and read. If she had a personal life it was a mystery to everyone.

Seriously! If I worked in an office and some mean hag took it upon herself to physically roll me around in my chair, she would leave that day missing a rather large tuft of unkempt hair. Put that in your hard drive and smoke it! }(
