Makeup
Who here wears the stuff on a daily basis?
Thoughts/feelings?
Tool of the patriarchy? Fun and games?

1. I won't leave the house without wearing makeup.
Even if I'm staying home for the day I still put on some makeup, at least mascara and lipstick.
I'm addicted.

10. Depends...
Some people think wearing makeup means using a putty knife to smear a ton of it on.
It can be worn lightly and tastefully so that it enhances your looks.

and spend about $75 because there are so many great bargains. Plus, there are usually specials that if you buy at least $30 in perfume, you get a free gift. I fall for those specials all the time. I have enough perfume for the next 10 years. But, of course, I have used some of these free gifts for Xmas presents. And then they send me the brochures in the mail with coupons for $3.50 to $5 off if you purchase at least $10. Well, I can't resist dollars off coupons. I have to pay Ulta a visit tomorrow and hope I can get out of there for under $75. But I have a $3.50 off coupon, so we'll see. The bad thing is that Ulta is only about 1 1/2 miles from my house, which makes it too convenient.

17. I wear some if I'm leaving the house but I don't get all Tammy Faye
about it.

A little powder, little blush, mascara--a bit of eyeliner if I feel like getting really fancy about it but I don't use that every day. I just like how I look with a bit of color on the old cheeks since I have none naturally and don't like looking like a grim specter of death when I leave the house. The boyfriend can't tell the difference--he claims--if I have it on or not, which is good because I'm not putting it on for him anyway. I just like feeling like I look halfway decent. I don't put it on if I'm just hanging out in my house, and I don't care if people see me without it.

18. Sad and embarrassing story:
My wife, god bless her, tears her eyebrows out. It's a pathology borne from a painful childhood. (I bite my nails for the same reason).

Every day she needs at least a half an hour just to carefully apply makeup to make it look as if she actually has eyebrows. She's really good at it.

But I love her, sans brows or with.

19. I always wear it.
I have a lot of fun with cosmetics, hair color, and clothing. I've always enjoyed using them and changing them up.

I think no less of other people who don't wear it. If you don't enjoy makeup, it would be a ridiculous expediture of time and money.

As far as it being a tool of the patriarchy, I assume that as long as I'm doing something more for my own enjoyment, it's significance to other people is basically irrelevant. If you look hard enough, you can find a way to blame practically every on of our practices and behaviors on "the Man," but I'd rather conduct myself as I see fit without fretting about every one of my preferences.

22. I am a makeup queen with waaaay too much makeup!!
I don't wear a ton of makeup and try to keep it real but I love wearing it and probably have way much more makeup than I need especially when it comes to eye-shadows and lip glosses. My only complaint is they don't make foundation makeup fair enough (not goth white but just to match my pale complexion) or the fact that it's almost impossible to find a decent mascara that is just plain brown. I'm a pale blonde so black mascara looks whorish on me. Plus I kinda freak some folks out because I won't pencil in my eyebrows, which are very fair blonde in color.

I usually wear a little bit of makeup everyday only because I just think I look a little better and my self-esteen is a tad bit higher (I'm trying to deal with losing weight so I can use all the self-esteem I can get!)

31. Maybelline mascara in the pink & green tube is the BEST...
and apparently, many famous makeup artista also agree-- or so i've read. Its great going on, and cheap. They make brown, brown/black, and black. regular or waterproof.

Sadly, I've gotten to where I hardly wear makeup at all. When I am meeting a friend for lunch, or going out in the evening, I will slap some on. I used to be a real makeup queen. Still own tons of the stuff, but only use a handful- when & IF I have the energy to apply it. I've become very lazy, and frankly don't care what others think. Maybe I should care a bit more, at least for poor hubby's sake!

43. Have you tried mixing shades?
Get a little wide-mouth jar with a tight-fitting lid that will hold a whole bottle of foundation. Pour a bottle of ivory foundation in it, then add just a very small amount of goth white to it. Stir very thoroughly--for about a minute after you THINK it's completely mixed--then apply some to your face. If it's still not light enough. put in a little more goth white. Keep doing this until you've lightened it up enough.

The "apply to your face" direction is crucial--most people test makeup on the backs of their hands, and guess what? A LOT of people's hands are a different color than their faces.

Also, try Joe Blasco's brown mascara--it's really good pro-grade stuff. You'll have to go to one of the online theatrical supply houses because Blasco's minimum order is $75.

60. I'm the queen of makeup
I use Laura Mercier for almost everything, but I still buy my cheap Maybelline mascara. It's the only brand I like. I've tried more expensive brands, but none are as good as Maybelline. Have you tried one their browns?

I'm pretty fair, too, but not as fair as you. There's a Laura Mercier foundation I use that's light enough. They also have a very light tinted moisturizer that might be light enough for you. I'll try to remember to bring it to New York (my daughter has it right now) and you can try it out.

When I travel, I always need a larger suitcase just so I have room for my makeup and hair stuff. And I bring travel sizes of whatever I can and don't bring half of what I actually have.

24. not i, however...
bedouin women who know otherwise nothing of make-up, will reach into a spent fire-ring, and pull out bits of charcoal that they will then, somehow tastefully (if indeed those are the words) apply, strategically about their eyes to accentuate 'the mystique of woman'...the allure if you will; of the female eye.

in the end it is all a primal expression, refer: The Power of Myth - Joseph Campbell

likewise ala piercings, while clearly beyond 'fun & games' = dress-up in the barbie doll sense at any rate or imo

I do use moisturizer, though. Not sure if that counts.

On Edit: If I use makeup, I use Bare Escentuals. It covers without looking like a mask.

Make-up is fine if done sparingly. If your face shines, it's too much. I work with women that simply put so much on that they shine and look very plastic. It is a complete turn-off. I really go for the natural look or just a light touch of make-up. I love my wife's olive tone so I don't want her to cover that up at all.

44. I wear it most of the time, but a little goes a long way for me.
I don't wear it on the weekends unless I am going somewhere for dinner or something like that. I dread putting it on, but when I get new make-up, I can't wait to put it on. Go figure.

49. Another everyday wearer here
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 02:22 PM by Penndems
Eye shadow, liner, mascara, blush and lipstick to work. Eye shadow, mascara, blush and a little gloss on the weekends. All of my make-up comes from Sephora (I could own stock in that company, LOL!). Nothing heavy-handed here, either - it has to look natural.

The last time I wore foundation and powder was at my wedding. My mother made a point of telling me repeatedly during my teenage years that liquid foundation was a pore-clogger and wrinkle-producer - advice that stuck with me.

I do like a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, though. My favorite is by Laura Mercier (the one for porcelain skin; can't think of the name of the shade).

Wearing make-up isn't a political thing in my case. I like the fun of putting it on and experimenting with different colors.

And YES - my husband likes to see a lady wearing make-up, as long as she doesn't look like Tammy Faye Baker. He sees it as part of a woman's femininity, and that's a real turn-on for him!

Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 04:45 PM by SharonRB
It's a bit too light for me, so I used to mix it with Sand. Now they have a new color called Fawn, which is not bad. I mix it with the regular moisturizing foundation. I stick with Laura for almost everything.

I'm the best Laura Mercier customer at our local Saks store -- no kidding! A friend of mine is the director of the Fifth Avenue Club and he's told me that I buy more Laura Mercier than anyone else at that store. They love it when they see me coming. I'm on a first-name basis with all the gals who work the counter.

I'll have to check out the "Fawn" shade. That might be closer to my skin tone than what I'm currently wearing.

Have you tried the Laura Mercier bath products? Creme Brulee, Au Lait, Tarte au Cintron - I love 'em ALL! (I keep a tube of the Creme Brulee hand creme in my purse.) :)

I love, love, love the creme brulee! I use the body cream -- I forgot exactly what it's called. It comes in a squat glass jar. I use it both as a moisturizer and instead of cologne. It smells so phenomenal!

I also sometimes use cafe au lait body wash when I have samples and the citron hand lotion. They're all really yummy.

I wish I had a brick and mortar Sephora nearby, but I have to make do with Sephora.com here at home. It's fun to wait for the packages, though. When are they going to come to Memphis?!? We did just get a Parisian, which has an awesome makeup department that caries a lot of what Sephora does. It's not the same, though. It doesn't have the pretty, color coordinated rows of makeup beckoning...

I have to say that it is a skill I am glad that she acquired. Though there is nothing more happening than accentuating the areas that she wants to draw attention to, she looks so good when she is done it is like a ready-made work of art.

I used to be of the minimal-is-best type, but when applied with skill makeup can accentuate a woman's beauty. As long as the products are safe, I do not have a problem with people using them.

Eyeshadow & mascara--or people ask me if I'm tired. And a bit of lipstick--or chapstick, in a pinch. Occasionally, blusher.

Everytime I've tried foundation, it looked fake. In Houston, it will usually disappear in a rivulet of sweat, anyway.

All over a moisturizer with sunblock, of course.

No "patriarch" ever told me to wear makeup. In fact, the old time patriarchs prefer their wimmin as God made them. (Only harlots paint their faces!)

A lot of people are surprised that I don't wear makeup to even very formal occasions, but I really don't care for it and feel prettier without.

As an aside, I've never had a guy say to me that I ought to wear makeup, or for that matter that he was any less than thrilled that I don't. Women wear makeup to impress and compete with each other, men generally don't give a shit or actively dislike the stuff, in my experience.

We're among friends! :pals:

I'm pretty sensitive about my skin. I'd love to be able to go without a base. I mean, I'd REALLY love to. Thank goodness for the minerals - they are light and natural looking.

I still love lipstick, and I love how a bright pinky color will light up my whole face, and if I felt like I could get away with wearing only lipstick, I would.

During the day, I don't wear much eye-makeup. Usually just mascara and a neutral skin-toned cream eyeshadow. Today, I'm not even wearing that. For night time, I like to glam it up.

68. I wear it when I go out but not if I'm staying in for the day
I've discovered a wonderful concealer that helps a great deal with the dark circles under my eyes that naturally came with my Italian heritage. So, I use that plus a little powder, a little blush, and some lipstick. Just before my wedding, I also discovered that using a tiny bit of eye liner really brings out my eyes and makes me look less fatigued (and I'm ALWAYS fatigued, so that helps).

It's not a tool of the patriarchy if it makes a person feel better about herself, IMHO.

I wore it often in the summer when I broke my glasse and switched back to contacts. Even though I had thought that my glasses looked bad, I got used to having color around my eyes. I also noticed my face more in general since half of it wasn't hidden.
I haven't been wearing it much lately. My face looks better since I am eating better and have gotten used to how I look without glasses. I am generally tired in the morning when I go to work so I don't have time. I am in a more agrophobic phase lately so when I go out I don't want to draw attention to myself.

85. I don't wear it
I went through a period in my teens and early 20's when I'd wear it to go out but it was a pain in the ass and I didn't really feel I looked better with it. I guess I just don't see the point - for people who are already perfectly nice looking, there's no need to wear something to make yourself look better and for people who are plain or whatever, it just winds up looking like a mask. I don't like masks - I like seeing people for what they are.

Every once in a blue moon, like if I'm going to a wedding or a formal party, I'll wear just a touch of eye shadow and a bit of blush and lip gloss. Other than that, it's au natual for me.

87. Very little.
I never wear foundation since it's always too dark for my skin and makes me look like I've been made up for my own funeral.

My eye color is pale green-blue and my lashes and eyebrows aren't very dark, so I just use a slight purple-ish eye liner on the outer half of my lower lid. Also, a little bit of brown eyebrow pencil and a subtle bit of blush. If I'm going out on a date with Mr. Z., I might wear lipstick, but it usually wears off before I get where I'm going ;-) .

People always assume I'm not wearing make-up, so maybe I shouldn't bother. But, I only wear it for the most practical reason: to draw attention to my best facial feature.

I used to be very anti-make-up. Now, I think there are more serious issues to worry about.

I can't wear most sunscreens (think Job's trials - boils and such), but titanium dioxide works on me. And since I just might pass as a vampire - that whole bursting into flame thing just might apply....

So it's a foundation with lots of TiO2, Boots loose powder, Almay black plum mascara (since it looks pretty natural on this redhead - browns do not) and something on the lips.

If I'm not going outside, I don't bother.

It doesn't look like I have much on...I blend, blend, blend. I use only earth tones around my eyes, and don't go too bright with my lipstick; on a special occasion, I may wear red, and some black eyeliner (like a 40's movie star).

Foundation is usually minimal, if I wear it at all.

I wish I looked good without it, and most of the women I know wear little to none.

I'm not obsessive about it by any means; if you don't like the way I am, don't look!

106. I wear mascara
Black, baby.

Elvis did. In the '50s, for that matter, he not only had his hair done at a beauty parlor but wore eyeshadow (dude, Twisted Sister and Motley Crüe, 30 years later, thought they were being 'edgy'?) as well as the mascara...no wonder he was atatcked so many times by crewcut Memphis boys.

I also use clear mascara, now and then, to help keep my eyebrows in check. Other than that, I usually wear no other stuff on my face but I could perhaps use a little expertise in eyeliner, eyebrow stuff, etc, because it may add to my whole look (though I don't want to take a whole lot more time getting ready for work, either). I could really use guidance in putting on a base, or whatever it's called, especially for those days when my previously-bulletproof skin (seemingly getting more sensitive over the years) gets and stays red when I shave after not doing so a couple or three days.

As for makeup on women, I really have no blanket preference. My wife had big makeup (like, applied with a putty knife and very pale with dark, strking eye makeup) and big hair when I met her in the late '80s -- I do kinda retain a fondness for that look, the sorta New Wave Hooker approach complete with appropriate wardrobe -- but wore none (very little, other than lipstick, anyway) for most of our marriage. I accompanied her sister to a famous, expensive make-up artist in Beverly Hills (Valerie...she has her own line of stuff that's very expensive but, apparently, very good) a little while back and was amazed by the results...Valerie made her look preternatural, like a movie star, and really brought out her eyes (possibly her best physical character). So I can go for all-natural, with no make-up (most of my life this far has been spent in outdoors pursuits and most fot he women I've known in that realm are usually sans makeup) or mad eup well...either very subtle accentuations or complete 'glamour' jobs that, nevertheless, look natural in that too-perfect-to-be-real Hollywood way.

And I've become disturbingly used to mascara...I use it to touch up roots in sideburns and around the hairline, too, so it's safe to say I wear more of the stuff (waterproof, and I've got several brands I've tried..right now I'm using mostly Avon for my eyelashes) than any woman this side of Tammy Fay. I wouldn't mind a less subtle mascara, though, one that makes my lashes extra thick and black...again, going for the Elvis look.

Makeup's kinda cool to play with, I bet...

111. Thanks!!!!!
Is that the Jack Black? Will I look like him?

A long-time female impersonator here in Vegas (he's an excellent dude who now impersonates a male celebrity, albeit a famously effeminate one) told me to look for a tube makeup that just pencils on and will leave my face a little tanned, too, without the hassle of liquid makeup or that powdery base stuff (if it's not already obvious, I have no idea as to the right terms or even what kinds of products are out there). I'm writing your suggestions down and will check 'em out -- someone here suggested I go to a makeup artst for a single consult, so maybe I'll also do that at some point (unless the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy crew come into my life and deliver me from slobbiness!). :D

Thanks!

:headbang:

115. I wear it almost every day because I like it.
I don't feel that I *need* it however and I have no problem going out without it. I'm pretty either way. :)

118. lip gloss
too lazy for everything else. lip gloss makes my lips feel good from being moisturizing and in some cases cool.

122. I only wear it a few times a year, for special occasions and such
I don't mind putting it on to feel dressy when I'm in the mood, but if anyone told me I "should" or "had to" I'd tell them to bite me.

123. I like makeup
I wear it out 90% of the time. But,if I'm running late in the morning, it's the first thing eliminated. Having said that, I have managed to steam line putting on makeup to ten minutes, while watching the morning news and drinking coffee.

124. I do too
Sounds exactly like me. In the mornings though, I'm down to about 5 minutes, cause it's just foundation-powder-1 colour eyeshadow-mascara. I leave lip gloss till I get where I'm going.

I trained as a makeup artist for theater, I find it fun :)

127. I wear makeup to work and on special occaisons.
I never wear foundation but sometimes use powder during the summer because I have oily skin and I hate having a shiny nose. I don't have any favorite brand and get most of my makeup from drug stores or the dollar store.
