Poll question: Is Clay AIken the greatest singer of all time? |
|
Just had to get back at you Clay-bashers. He really is a great singer. The song may suck, but that's only because they're rushing him out to make money off him. He's going to be around for a long, long time--there aren't many people out there with such incredible vocal talent.

1. He Wants To Be The Rick Astley Of The 00's... |
|
He's got an okay voice... but he's got the mannerisms of a BAD lounge act. I can easily see him performing at the Coconut Room at some midwestern Ramada Inn.

2. Oh please, everybody on the American Idle show sound the same |
|
The music, the lyrics, the songs, the presentation - there's little variation, but I doubt anybody that's exciting with energy would actually win...
Maybe I just watched the wrong weeks?

4. Did Ya Ever Get Tired Of That "New Style" Of Singing? |
|
You know... where they warble and bounce all over the place trying to find a note. It's not a vibrato... they are trying to display their "range" but it makes them sound like a warped vinyl record or a singer who can't stay on key.
It's annoying as hell.
It's not even a "wind-up" gradually rising note like Patti Labelle does (in Over the Rainbow) or Sam Harris (uh... in Over the Rainbow, again)... it's just this vocal gymnastics that sounds horrible.
Vocal acrobatics is HORRIBLE... I wish folks would stop doing it.

He appears to be the second rate Barry Manilow of the "Who is Barry Manilow?" set.

if you like bland singers who have that oh-so-popular white-bread suburban teen appeal, and lack the talent to write their own songs.
otherwise he sucks big time.

10. Clay Aiken is the Potsie Webber of our time |
|
Which is not necessarily a bad thing, because if there's anything our time needs, it's a new Potsie Webber.
As someone else said here, he IS Mr. Lounge Singer. Coconut Ballroom, here we come.

He's overhyped. He may sing fine, but the fact that he released that song makes him look stupid. It was overproduced and cheesy, and any decent singer would be ashamed of recording something like that.

13. Allen couldn't be more right... |
|
(Even tho he spells his name completely wrong :D)
Everyone from American Idol wants to sound the exact same, and it's a rotten way to sing a song in the first place.
American pop singing was ruined sometime in the 80s, by what has now become the "Whitney-Mariah-Christina School of Lame-Ass Vocal Gymnastics"... As if it's a boring thing to ever sing a plain melody or hold a constant note... Now it's all about sparkle and smarm, and never about lyric or melody...
If you want a decent modern singer, try Micheal Buble for pop and Josh Groban for classical... Sorry, but almost anyone is better than the crap they churn out on the "Idol" shows...

so it would be a little presumptuous to hand that title around his skinny lttle neck. And yes, the guy can sing...but of all time..it is a pretty saafe bet to say hell no.

18. Clay is a good singer, |
|
but I don't think he's found the right material yet, for all the reasons you all just named. He's still listening to the American Idol folks about what to sing apparently.
Clay does have a good set of pipes, and I hope he will find the right context for them. Broadway, perhaps? Don't know if he can act or not. Only then will he have the chance to be around for a long time. Time will tell.

20. Honey, anyone can match the range of Mariah Carey! |
|
Just because she throws in a few screams in every song doesn't mean she has range.
Talk about over-rated.
It was great seeing her on VH1 Divas special singing with Aretha and getting blown away!

21. Well, I can certainly agree on this with you, Joeybee12 |
|
Maria Carey has always been extremely over-rated IMO.
But, if I could suggest, please broaden your horizens before settling on Aiken as your all time fav... Some talent, yes, but definitely not a "contender..." And the over-hype coming his way almost certainly assures he will be a "has-been" soon. To each, his own, though...

22. Glad we agree--but please re-read my orginal post because I only |
|
started this just to get back at all the Clay-bashers.
Time will tell if he has what it takes, but come on, the guy does have great pipes--it just kills me when people don't even agree to that!
I think we're seeing Clay over-kill right now, and that's probably understandable since he's not controlling his career--those marketing him (i.e., the American Idol folks) are. It will be interesting once he's out of his original contract to see what he does.
