My first paper for Comm 305 topic is...(It is a hum-dingier)
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 01:13 PM by Lady Freedom
To examine my cultural identity-to describe how I define myself as a cultural being-and to show how that affects my communication style.

1. Do you realize how hard this is?
Looking at myself and explaining 'me'?

2. It might be easier
if you had to react in person with people from other cultures instead of doing the class online...maybe...just a thought. It seems like an odd course to take online.

4. The in-room class is full and I barely got into this one!
As for other cultures, well, there aren't very many other cultures to be in class with. Most of the foreign exchange students are is special classes and there is not many other students from outside the four state area.

6. I know! I thought about that the other night...
when Lady was discussing her on-line classes and her semester.

I was kinda amazed that she was taking biology online. I can't even slightly imagine how that would be beneficial to any student.

3. Hmm, that sounds like a good topic.
It's a good idea to practice a little reflection!

Do you feel like you know where to start and what ideas you'd like to incorporate?

I'd be happy to help if there's any way I can!

5. Thanks but I think I did what he was looking for.
I hope. It is hard to look at yourself in terms of culture and ethic views when you are the original America Mutt!

7. Here's a great start - assume that everyuthing you think is normal, isn't
And assume that in your communication style, you constantly assume that everyone has the same background as you and so you can use a linguical shorthand.

That was the big lesson for me when I finally escaped from my home-shit-town, and experienced the real world.

Especially when I moved to Hawaii, and realized that the people there had no concept of "snow" or "tornado" or "ice" or "cold" or "300 hundred miles of corn fields" or even of cows, agriculture, lakes, rivers, hunting, snowmobiles, skiing, driving 3 hours (let alone 8 or 20) to get somewhere, 40 acre backyards, potato dumplings, lutefisk, german heritage, german and norwegian and american indian words, wheat, corn, barley, the smell of cows, the smell of fields at manure spreading time, tractors, ice hockey, lacrosse, parkas, snowmobile suits, weeks without seeing the sun, overcast days, ice fishing, freshwater fish, furnaces, sweaters, casseroles, calling people "aunt" and "uncle" based only on biological lines, slush, sleet, scarves, and on and on and on...
