1. Is it expensive/hard?
I always figure it takes expensive equipment and ingredients and a billion years.

What do you store the soap in when you're done? How long does it keep?

What kind of soap are you making now? Is it better than storebought soap? Are you basically making handsoap? Could you make shower soap?

Oh my lord, I just had question diarrhea. :silly:

3. You can make glycerin soap
fairly easily. All the supplies are at Michaels or A C Moore. You can make enough soap to last a year or more for about the cost of one designer bar.

5. Hand soap. and we'll see if it even works :)
Edited on Sun Jan-22-06 04:32 PM by Moochy
No expensive equipment, a hand mixer, some Lye and some vegetble oil + olive oil recipe I found. Plus I'm using some oils extracted found from a rabid mongoose in the neighborhood. It will impart the frenzied strength of the mongoose.

from http://waltonfeed.com/old/soap/soap.html
Use a blender. The more finely the lye and fat molecules are intermixed the faster they will saponify. Using a blender, the trace stage can be reached in minutes instead of hours. Don't use an upright blender unless you don't mind millions of tiny air bubbles being permanently whipped into your soap. Use the hand-held type instead. With one of these, even your most stubborn oils should trace within 20 minutes. Sometimes, you can get a trace with animal fats in just a couple of minutes. Anyone who has sat around for hours stirring a batch of soap will be ecstatic with this.

4. Why?
I mean, isn't soap cheap enough...?

I'm all in favor of homecrafing. Made my own beer, wine, cheese, etc. But...soap?

From the recipe I have you just need some lye vegetable oil, and some olive oil. I'm making my without any animal fats, since rendering blubber isnt something I'm up for this afternoon. :D

16. Cool, It never hurts to have more how-to books!
Sounds like its in the public domain. The website I cited earlier had some neat recipes with just vegetable oils.

It's on my list of books to grab on ebay. $12 for a used copy!

17. Besides the rabid mongoose musk?
To counter the rabid mongoose musk scents... :+ I've added some cooling mint oils, and some lemon oils and milled oatmeal.
