How do I delete my avatar?

The avatar is fine, but I'm interested in switching to another one. It conforms to the 48x48, 3KB limit. When I go to upload it, I'm told that it was successfully loaded, and that i should use 123456xyz.jpg or whatever in my profile. The problem is, that's also the filename of my existing avatar and it keeps showing up instead of the new one.

1. Backspace the old one out of the avatar field?

2. If you checked the appropriate option GIF or JPG, just hit refresh.

Thanks for the advice. It was late last night when I tried this--maybe I was just making an obvious mistake. I'll try again when I get home.
