or they could have been F-14's...the base has both. When my son was small, he would come screaming into the house...Now he stares in wonder. :hi:

1. What base is that?
It has both Navy and Air Force jets?

7. You learn something every day. It's a Joint ANG base
meaning, there is more than one service represented.

14. It's an Air Force refueling ( I think the 127th) and then a Naval Reserve
base.Oh and the Coast Guard is pretty big, being on the water as we are. Those are the two majors...although most of our young men and women of all branches leave for Iraq from there. :(

2. -14s or -15s?
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 02:10 PM by GOPisEvil
15s are USAF, -14s are Navy.

If they were single-tail, they were -16s. If they were twin tail, they were -15s or -14s.

I've been an aircraft nut my whole life.

13. I grew up either on or next to Air Force Bases for most of my life.
Now I think my current house is quiet. :)

My parents have all manner of training aircraft flying over their house all the time.

6. I never am bothered by it...except for when we first moved in, and
after 9/11, when they were taking off incessantly and flying overhead (protecting the coastline here) at 2-3 AM. :hi:

8. I think the odd buzzing of fighter jets is the coolest thing ever
It's one of the only things I miss about being on a military base.

9. Screwwwwww that.
I used to live about 5 miles from NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach. I was getting tired of being on a phone conversation, having to pause, saying "hang on a few seconds, plane coming", and waiting for the rending of the heavens as a flight of F-18's comes in low and slow.

I now live in the country, where I have only to deal with the occasional Harley Davidson...which I hate, as well.

10. I used to live in a mobile home that was across the street from a cemetary
where a member of the hell's angels was buried (what an oxymoron, eh?)...The third Saturday of May, every year for the 6 years I lived there, there'd come an hour long roaring up the road about 8 AM...and then again at 5, as some of his friends came to visit with him. :hi:

11. there was supposed to be some big exercise over dc the other day
involving all kinds of aircraft. For some reason I always like seeing and hearing the fighters. I guess it happened last night, but I got no enjoyment except for hearing some F-16's for about a minute, and seeing the lights off in the distance. Usually when I hear them I figure there's been another restricted airspace violation or something.

12. On the 21st they did a huge F-16 exercise here with roaring planes
and mock explosions. It was quite interesting to listen to. We had a fake hijacking a couple of years back with a NorthWest Airlines 727 and that was wild. :hi:

here. Strange thing, last week a plane took off with 5 jet escorts...must have been someone or something VERY important.

18. I love the sound of a P-51 Mustang
That Merlin engine has the coolest roar. :headbang:

I was gonna say the airport here is home to five of 'em, but I just checked a locally produced web site — http://www.mustangsmustangs.com — and learned one has just been sold.

I sat in this sucker once. Cramped as all hell. Dunno how those guys flew those hours-long escort missions in WWII.

Iron Ass has left Hollister for San Diego.

Hugh Bikle's P-51 N72FT, 44-74494 has been sold. Dan Martin delivered her in January to her proud new owner in San Diego. Hugh has owned N72FT for almost 20 years and has kept this red nose is excellent condition. Hugh and Dan could be seen on many weekends lined up on 31 for a very nice formation takeoff. It's tough to see her go. Hollister is home for several P-51s. Even with this loss, we still have four airworthy mustangs on the field.

19. Wow! I need to visit Hollister!
I love P-51s! They sound like they need a tune-up at idle, but under throttle, it's a lovely sounding engine.

21. Did you check out that web site?
"Flying Dutchman" (http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/p-51/survivors/pages/A68-100.shtml) is owned by a local dentist who specializes in treating patients with mental and physical disabilities. He often flies it around the state to treat people — sort of a variation on the Flying Doctors.

He told a story once about flying into San Diego, and some rookie air traffic controller got suspicious of him for a bit because she had no idea what a P-51 is. :eyes:

He doesn't own an airplane, much less a P-51, but his family has, I think, three vintage Mustangs.

26. If only I'd gotten a loan I should have...
...I'd have a nice '66 Mustang, with original K-code engine.

Oh well...maybe one day. Hell, if I win lottery, maybe I can have both. As long as I'm dreaming...

20. Merlins
While I've seen several P-51s in museums, a few years ago I was driving past the Frederick County airport during an airshow when one flew over. Not only was its fuselage distinctive, but I don't think I'll ever forget the sound of that Merlin. I love the P-47, but oh, that Merlin!

22. Even better is more than one
A couple of summers back, "Ridge Runner" and "Iron Ass" were out for a Sunday morning formation flight. God, it was awesome.

And one day an F-86 was visiting and it and one of the Mustangs came out to play.

One of the few perks of living here.
