Poll question: US city with the best Hawaiian food?
You know da kine: kalua pig (similar to pulled pork), laulau (pork and a bit of fish wrapped in taro and then in ti leaves), ahi poke (that's POE-kay, marinated raw fish), haupia (coconut pudding) and of course poi (it can be grayish rather than purple).

And no fair writing in those awful touristy luaus!

1. South San Francisco
Hawaiian Luau and Bar-B-Que, a blue collar joint off the beaten path run by a huge Hawaiian Irishman and crew of Samoans. Size fourteen shoe or larger appears a requirement for employment there.

What's that twice cooked pork thing on a stick called, PE-PE Kali?

4. That'd be pipi kaula -- and it's beef, not pork
"pipi" is what the Hawaiians heard when the haoles said "beef". There are lots of Hawaiian loan words like that: "ka'a" for car, "kala" for dollar (or money generally), etc.

Pipi kaula is basically a form of beef jerky, not "jerked" all the way.

5. Yes, that's it. Thanks...
and your description is spot on - a form of beef jerky, not "jerked" all the way.

2. It was some kicckin' little grind shop up
the coast from Kaneohe. Granted I was only there or a week, and couldn't sample the cuisine extensively, but I really liked this little place somewhere near Chinaman's Hat.
