1. Los Angeles and surrounding communities, hands down |
|
we have the largest Thai community in the US...there is, however, one particular San Diego restaurant that the princess of Thailand frequented...it is on 5th street and of all the Thai restaurants I have ever been, this one was best.

for Alberta Street alone.
I would have voted for Washington, DC, but the Thai Room is no longer.

6. Georgetown, Connecticut Ave., and other parts of town are not unblessed by |
|
Thai chefs.
But it's a good poll, regardless.

5. Portland gets my vote too. |
|
Our friends lived in Hollywood district and we went to Sweet Basil all the time. Great food. Typhoon in NW was good too.

New York and LA are beating us.
Love Sweet Basil. And Typhoon in SW is as good as the one in NW. Thai Orchid on W. Burnside is also glorious. Beau Thai on NW 21st has all degrees of heat. And Thai Noon on NE Alberta is run by offshoot chefs from Typhoon.
Halo Thai on NE Alberta emphasizes different flavors than its predecessors in town, but is no less tasty, and its owner and chef are committed to excellence. I haven't yet tried the very well reviewed Siam Society down the street, but the reviews have been highly favorable, and the setting, a renovated electrical substation, is glorious - that's the building everybody in NE Portland wanted to see something great happen to, and apparently it has happened. After payday, I'm going to slip in to sample the bar menu and the Thursday night jazz trio.

Voted.
I've been to one or two places on Alberta, but I can't remember what the names were. I've only gone to one bad Thai place in the area, and that was Singha Thai in Lake Oswego.... it was awful.

But the fact that it's in Lake Oswego is really enough of a warning.
Give a yell if you come back to visit. I like the L&C folks I've met, and I feel a kinship for the Dakotans, even if they have vicious Montanan jokes in their past.

And you're right. I liked living in Lake O for specific reasons. It was close to Kruse Way (and therefore I-5). It was 8 minutes from L&C on Boones Ferry. And it was clean and pretty all the time. But it was sorely lacking in "culture" of any kind.

17. Damn, thanks for the tip. |

Multnomah Village is so damned charming. I guess the DU meet-ups have been in that neck of the woods recently; have you gone?
Will keep The Herbs on the radar screen and wish list.

|
because it was so close to home. It sounds like they may move the next one to a different part of town though.

7. Hollywood, east of the 101, is known as "Thai Town" |
|
There's some damn fine Thai food there, but the best I've ever had is in the city of Industry.
