I REALLY don't want to get anyone in trouble.
I have a deadline today, and I JUST received the materials I need to meet that deadline. I called the supervisor of the person who brought me these materials -- just to verify that I wouldn't be penalized if I missed the deadline. I told him "I REALLY don't want to get X in trouble; I just want to make sure there will be no penalty, because I JUST got this stuff."

I LIKE X -- a lot. I REALLY hope his boss doesn't ream him for this. :(

1. It's not your responsibility to cover for them...
You're being put under pressure and were right in letting their boss know the circumstances.

5. Usually if I don't want to get someone in trouble
I speak to them prior to speaking to their supervisor

6. I've already done that...
and a co-worker overheard my call to the supervisor, and said "I've had problems with X too. They gave me Y instead and I haven't had any more problems." Hmm.

It was this sentence that threw me a tad "I LIKE X -- a lot. I REALLY hope his boss doesn't ream him for this."
