Products You REFUSE To Buy 'Knockoff' Brands Of |
|
inspired by graywarrior's toilet paper thread.
Some for me (i'm sure there are others):
TOILET PAPER - sorry, my bum deserves the best :P
MAYONNAISE - bring out the Helman's and bring out the best or don't fucking BOTHER
TRASH BAGS - those cheap-assed (non-Heafty) pieces of shit aren't worth my time
what are some of yours?

|
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 12:47 PM by LynneSin
Do not even ATTEMPT to give me the cheapass peanut butter. It's just vile.
Ironically the only cottage cheese I will eat is Shop-Rite or Giant's own brand!
Edit Note: OBs. If you don't know what they are - don't ask!

80. Poor Annie...she has quite a story. She was the one who "invented" |
|
the white-cheddar-cheese popcorn, then was unwise enough to sign a distribution agreement with Wise (the potato-chip folks). when Wise was bought by Lay's, somehow the agreement she signed lost her rights to her own product.
But she soldiers on, tough lady that she is.
Her products are good enough that you should buy them on their own merits, but at the same time you'd be helping to support a fine, independent businesswoman. She's a real Yankee, and deserves our support.

|
(I still need the damnable things, so...)
I was studying in Moscow and ran out. Egads! What to do! Well, I went to the store and picked up a familiar looking blue and orange box with white letters on it. Problem solved. Except...
These weren't Tampax. They were Tampix! Counterfeit Tampax. Instead of coming in a reasonably smooth, white coated cardboard tube, they came in uncoated gray cardboard that must have been made out of used sandpaper and leftover insulation. These things were so truly and horribly awful with an awfulness that I kept them... for when the next woman forgot hers or ran out. We passed those counterfeit Tampax around the tour bus for six weeks. I think I still have them somewhere.

|
All the brand-name companies(I used to buy exclusively Always) have come out with this nasty "cotton" pad as some sort of improvement, but, as a cyclist, these pads chafe horribly and I just don't like tampons. So, since the generics are still made of the slippery stuff, that's all I buy now.

24. Best Foods Mayonnaise (Hellman's on the West Coast) |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 01:05 PM by SOteric
and it's not owing to brand loyalty or flavouring elements. There are several dishes I enjoy (such as a tuna melt, or my hot Parm-crusted crab dip or in which the mayo is a foundation ingredient) where heating the mayonnaise is required.
Best Foods doesn't break when heated. It's the only brand about which one can say that. It's a superiour emulsification. I've no interest in seeing my tuna melt curdled into the cheese, or watching my trout cakes break apart while they're being pan seared.
And I like the smell of Tide detergent. Nothing else smells clean to me. Mum used it.

34. The first thing that came to my mind |
|
was Kraft Macaroni and Cheese--I guess a lot of people are with me on this one!
Hershey's chocolate syrup.
Cellas--and only Cellas--chocolate covered cherries. They're the ones with the completely liquid center, not wit that white stuff. Yuck.
Coffee liquer--must be Kahlua only. I don't drink it often, but it can't be generic crap.
Gatorade--none of those "power drink" substitutes.
Prefer Pepsi to Coke, though I don't drink it much anymore.
Water--Arrowhead, Poland Spring, Evian, Aquafina or Dasani. Absolutely NO to store brands.
Cough medicine.
Videotapes--I won't use a lot of them, but Sony and TDK seem like the only good ones out there.
French's classic yellow mustard only, for regular mustard; Gulden's or French's for spicy.

Helman's Mayo, any breakfast cereal, Wonder bread (I was raised on the stuff, can't help it), Fleischman's margarine. I'm also pretty loyal to certain brand names for shoes, though I'm not rigid, as long as they aren't too cheaply made.

I don't care what it is, I'll buy the knockoff. 9 times out of 10, it's the same crap with an uglier label anyway so why should I care? Doesn't matter if I'm rich or poor...I love love love a good bargain.

Starbucks' pseudo-"chai" is  horrible.
The only brand of chai worth drinking is "Big Train" brand Spiced Chai. All others are junk.

I buy Ilford b&w and Fuji color.
Freud router bits, Forstner bits and sawblades
Porter-Cable power tools
Charmin Mega Roll toilet paper--we get a week out of one roll. (We're not shitting any less, either; there's a LOT of paper on those rolls.)
Honda Genuine fluids, except oil (the Honda dealer doesn't even use Honda oil) and Honda Genuine parts
Remo drumheads and Vic Firth sticks
Breyer's ice cream
Bush's Best chili (I think it's a different Bush)
Hebrew National hot dogs
I would say Starrett measuring tools, but I've had so many tape measures stolen by customers at work I don't dare bring the good one, so I carry a Stanley at work and use my Starrett stuff at home

|
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 10:56 PM by A-Schwarzenegger
All they do is brush dogs and cats till they have enough for a toupee. It looks pretty good but smells very very bad when it rains. I learned the hard way. Now I only buy toupees from the top company in the world, China Pure Recycle Teflon R.K. Hair Parts.

94. Trust me: NEVER buy a store brand of "cocktail Vegetable juice" |
|
I bought some Stop n Shop "V8" once and it nearly killed me. It was basically green pepper juice with a little red dye #2
I won't buy generic mayo either
My oatmeal must be Silver Palate Thick n Rough
My spices only come from the bulk bins in Central Market
NO Velveeta (unless making RoTel dip, my only exception), CheezWhiz or processed cheese foods, American Slices. of course I DO eat Kraft Blue Box Mac&Cheese, so that is one exception to the overprocessed cheese issue)
Don't much like house brand cold cereals either, or canned soups, unless I am using in a casserole.

101. Shampoo and conditioner |
|
Off brands dry out my hair. I generally get Garnier Nutrisse for dry/damaged hair, which is an affordable strenghtening and moisturizing shampoo/conditioner. L'oreal Vive has a similar product which I have purchased when on BOGO or other deep discount.
Solid antiperspirants: Off brands are hard and crumbly
Toilet Paper I will only buy Scott, none of those fluffy foo-foo types that run out in two days and/or leave lint on my butt.
Trash bags I've tried the "Ruffies" and they suck. It's Glad or Hefty for me forevermore.

feminine products, alcohol (duh), actually prefer Safeway's Strong (not Thirsty) paper towels to name brand. Northern double rolls is prefered but will suffer store brand if way cheaper.
Real mayo or Miracle whip and other bottled salad dressings, although homemade is prefered. Same with canned soup - almost never buy it anymore, but would have to be name brand. Same with Kraft mac and cheese - has to be real but not often.
Fake coke is fine, fake saltines are fine, fake oj, (not tampico - I mean store brand real oj), store brand milk, no prob. I don't buy that much processed crud so don't buy either. Suave is fine for shampoo, though I do prefer Pantene rinse, but I don't even use it all the time.
Oh - real motor oil, and GE lightbulbs. And real koolaid. Breyers natural vanilla, but other flavors can be store brand.
I am sure there is more, but I need to go to sleep. 'Night everbody!

I tried a cheaper brand but it didn't fit the opening and the water more or less flowed into the dispenser immediately. Supposedly the filter lasts two months so I've still got a week to go but mostly this tastes like tap water, in fact I'd bet on it, so I guess next time I'll go back to Brita.

House siding - wouldn't consider getting it on my house and wouldn't look at houses to buy that have it.
