My wife was surfing the net for a dictionary and found this unique and fun test. Doesn't take long. http://www.alphadictionary.com/articles/yankeetest.htmlTurns out I'm 34% percent Yankee.

I now reside in California (2 years) but spent the vast majority of my life in Texas.
Being well-traveled, most of my accent has been left in remote corners. So when I say things like "feeder road" or "tumped over" I get some strange looks usually followed by "Where are you from?".
Or "Drunk as Cooter Brown".

19. Actually, you're definitely a yankee. "The higher the score, the deeper |
|
from the south you are coming."
This from the site:
To find out how much Southern blood your speech shows, simply choose the words you use below, then press "Compute My Score!" at the end. The Alpha Dictionary will compute your score and tell you where you're coming from: are you (all) speaking Bubbaese or are you(se) a Yankee Doodle Dandy? The higher your score, the deeper from the South you are coming.
I scored 43%, definitely a yankee.

I think the problem is that we don't use distinctly New England expressions, which seemed to be favored for Yankee, but use expressions that are more commonly used across the US (no bias as the test says). There's also a class bias to the test. One of the questions asks how you would address a group of people. I answered "You all," even though "you'se" is the "correct" New York City answer. Now, when I'm hanging out with friends in a bar, I may say "you'se," but I usually adjust for audience and generally say "you all." I basically had to beat my really street, really New York accent out of myself during college, because (in my mind at the time) it made me seem working class and therefore "dumber." Obviously, now, I see the really disturbing class bias that underwrote that assumption, but I have been pretty successful at expunging much of my Brooklynese from my speech. This kind of thing, it seems to me, is not addressed down south as much. Everyone from the South is proud of a southern accent (even though the same class bias may cause some to stop listening when that twang starts twangin'), while accent is definitely tied to social class in a place like New York City.

But I'm confused, because it says 49% Yankee (barely a Yankee), but wouldn't 49% actually make me barely a Rebel?
It's interesting that my speech pattern is mixed, because I grew up in the South but have lived in the Northeast for 15 years.

87. This test isn't accurate |
|
I checked my score at first 66% dixie, changed one answer to a question and my score goes down to 55%. I don't have anything close to a southern accent, So I don't take this test seriously at all. I do have a hybrid of a Chicago and indiana accent. I do get tired of people who believe an Indiana accent is southern, If anyone wants to do a comparison watch a nascar race and listen to Tony Stewart talk during an interview then listen any of the southern drivers talk and there's a big difference.

93. If you're south of Iowa, you sound "southern" to these ears |

Southern Ohioans also sounded very southern to me, too, as a kid. Even people from southern Iowa have a "twang" in their speech that sounds faintly southern, for that matter.

I am in Cedar Rapids and I am 55% dixie.
I don't think I SOUND southern, but we use a lot of southern words.
I suppose that could be biased since my momma was raised in Arkansas and she still has the accent. I could have picked it up from her.

I have a fairly neutral accent; it's definitely NOT southern, despite living in the south since the age of eight.

I know many parts of Florida closely resemble the North but Okeechobee and Tallahassee are definitely the South!
