First day at new job. Orientation today and thru Friday.
Learning about the company, its products, policies, what can get you fired and 4 hours on Sexual Harassment. Tomorrow will consist of 8 hours of Safety. BORING but necessary.

They briefly discussed the Union situation at the facility. There are four of them and my trade, sheet metal, falls into the "Shipyard Workers Union". A weak but somewhat effective union. I have the option to join or not to. I'll probably join but will talk to some of the other workers in my department about it.

I dint actually get to work in the shop or on a ship till Monday.

This job pays $23.00 an hour but I have to get up at 4:15 AM to catch the trolley to the waterfront. Hell, that beats fighting rush-hour traffic and the piss-poor parking situation there. Its a first come first serve deal. 4700 employees and 2000 parking spaces that are situated in the worst neighborhood in San Diego. My 06 Mustang GT wouldn't last a month parking down there.

This is a far cry from nursing(my other profession), but its less stress and more money.

1. Nurses are overworked right now.
This must seem like a piece of cake compared to nursing. Good luck to you!

BTW-if I can ask, what field of nursing were you in?

6. Long hours watching and assisting people die.
When insurance policies ran out and medical/care wouldnt pay, they would be sent to out facility to die. I've taken part in at least seven cases like Terri Schiavo. It was just getting to me emotionally.

10. I bet it's stunning.
I've never watched them built. I remember watching them come in from Great Lakes and landing in Kenosha Harbor when I was little. I used to watch them all the time.
Right now I have to envy you.

14. Congratulations on your new job!
My husband makes about the same salary and he joined the union, because he said he wouldn't be making as much without them. They don't meddle too much, and they have been effective where he works.

Again congrats!
