I can't believe I missed this . . . Elmo: "Who wants to die?"
http://www.local6.com/news/5784303/detail.html

A mother in Dallas is one of several parents complaining about a new interactive book for toddlers in which Sesame Street character Elmo asks "who wants to die?" according to a Local 6 News report.

Family members said 16-month-old Miranda Boll's new book, "Potty Time With Elmo," was supposed to teach an interactive lesson using voice commands.

However, when the book's buttons are pressed, it reportedly says something it is not supposed to -- "who wants to die?"

. . . . .

I can't believe I didn't see this before

1. Saw it on the news this morning.
Guess it is supposed to sound like "who wants to go," or something, like that, but my keenly honed medical transcriptionist ears didn't have a clue WHAT Elmo might have been saying . . . the context made it pretty clear, though.

Somehow I just can't think of Elmo as evil, even though he is a little monster.

2. I think I read it was supposed to say "who wants to try using the potty"
or something along those lines (it is a potty training book I believe).

But instead of try it said die and got cut off at the end :P

I can't always understand the the ones my kids get, and sometimes they sound downright morbid. They have a Dipsy (Teletubbies) doll that speaks several phrases, and I swear one of them sounds like he's saying "I can't breathe!" Surely that isn't what he's saying, but I can't make it out any other way. They also have a little baseball that makes sounds when it hits something. One of the sounds is supposed to be a cheering crowd, but it sounds like everyone is screaming in abject terror instead, as if they got the sound bite from the end of the movie Titanic as the ship is going down.

5. I agree, there are quite a few that sound really bad, but there is just
something deliciously twisted about a little read squeaky-voiced monster saying "Who wants to die?" Hell, it'd even be funnier if it was animated and when he said that line it dropped into a James Earl Jones type voice

6. It is.
The fact that it's Elmo just makes the story. I definitely appreciate the humor in it. I call my kid's toy Heimlich Maneuver Dipsy. He even pauses between each word slightly, which really adds to the effect. :)
