What have you listened to recently? |
|
Not much yesterday because of Thanksgiving (hope everyone had a great one - and don't worry if I'm not posting on DU - it's a period where I have a lot going on,) but today:
Reba McEntire - For My Broken Heart (a modern classic - her newer albums are merely good (with Read My Mind being best,) but she deserves to be a fave due to her voice and touching albums like this)
Kay Hanley - Cherry Marmalade (hope more people discover her and artists like Abra Moore and Bree Sharp - this album is also a classic type)
on a listening party from Netscape:
Britney Spears - In The Zone (this is the first time a whole album of hers has been a guilty pleasure, except for the song "Me Against The Music." - gets a B)
Nelly Furtado - Folklore (didn't hit me the first time, but the second time it sounded better and I'll listen again)

"Feats Don't Fail me Now". Hoy Hoy! A very underrated band imo. And Some guitar wizardry by Walter Trout. "Telling Stories". Give Walter a listen if you are a guitar fan.

Pacer, by The Amps (who were the Breeders, who were The Pixies)
The Breeders do a swell version of Happiness is a Warm Gun, btw.
Gus Viseur a Bruxelles, an swing accordianist during the occupation of Belgium in WW2. The cd has a swell illustration of Viseur by R. Crumb, btw.
dj Cheb i Sabbah- Krishna Lila, just cause who doesn't need to hear a little Hindu dance trance music once in a while?
Beatles White Album. Happiness is a Warm Gun syncopates so well, it's just swell.
Wayne Hancock- That's What Daddy Wants.
Elvis Costello- When I Was Cruel...I'd misplaced this one for months, so I've been listening to it so often it's obscene.
I'm listening to it now, in fact. Tear off your own head. I think I'll change my DU name to 15 Petals.
Son House Father of the Delta Blues 1965 New York sessions, because someone on this board had just discovered Son House and I wanted to hear John the Revelator about 50 times in a row after thinking about it.

The CDs I've played most recently include:
Future Days, by Can: improvised water music by one of the great old Krautrock bands
New Ancient Strings, by two Senegalese kora players whose names I can't remember-- intricate duets for the African gourd harp
Beyond the Calico Wall: a compilation of psychedelic era obscurities
Pink Moon, by Nick Drake: one of the bleakest albums ever made
Communication, by Windy & Carl: this one's quite recent, top-notch ambient drone music!
And the usual stuff: the Byrds, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, and all my prematurely postmodern faves...
