White folks, how do you refer to your ethnicity?

Most white people in the US are a mix of a bunch of different Europeans stocks and don't even know our exact composition, so we can't just say 'Irish' or 'German' or something like that.

The generic terms, white and caucasion, and pretty damn bland.

I'm wondering if people have other terms they like better. European American is too long, and Euro American sounds like a pee fetish club.

I actually like some the 'insults' other have for us: gringo, anglo, haoli.

Any better ideas?

I'll say either Scandinavian or Norwegian/Swedish.

My family tree, as far back as we can trace it (at least a couple hundred years), is mostly Norwegian and some Swedish. My father's background is entirely Norwegian.

When people ask my ancestry, that's my answer. If they press further, I sually just tell them "mostly German".

I have German on both sides of my family, and am 55% German when you add both sides up. The other 45% is mostly Borders Scot and English, but I have Irish, French, and a little Dutch tossed in for good measure. Just to make things interesting, there was a paper published last week which showed that it was a Moroccan legion that guarded Hadrians wall in ancient times, and that they didn't leave after their duty was finished. Since the Scottish side of my family originated only a few miles from the wall and we have evidence that they'd been there prior to the 1400's, I just may have a little Moor in me as well :)

Actually it really never comes up. When I have to fill out a form, I usually put down "caucasian" or whatever generic term they have, or just leave it blank if possible. I'm of such mixed ancestry, not all of it "white", that there isn't usually a category that fits.
