Are there any procrastinators in the house?
No matter what I do, I can't seem to get anything done ahead of schedule. I find it much more appealing to be here on DU, rather than putting together a bulletin, completing end-of-year reports, or balancing my checkbook in preparation for taxes.

What are you currently avoiding?
Or are you one of those annoying people who get everything done well ahead of schedule?

1. Ugh...it's my worst fault.
Right now it's school work. I was ahead of the game in week one, but now in week three, I'm waiting until the last minute to get started. :nopity:

10. That's why I've sworn a vow to NEVER get a PhD...
I know I don't have the discipline to work methodically. I looked at my best friend at commencement, and said "If you EVER hear me rumble about doing a DDiv or PhD, do me a favor and shoot me on sight.

That midterm and end of semester stress is something I never, ever miss.

4. Yes.
A series of projects need to be done by Monday evening, and I've got a ways to go. the life of a grad student. I could start now, and maybe i won't have to pull an all-nighter on sunday night, but I know I won't.

Meh. I wish I was annoying enough to get things done ahead of schedule.

we'll have more free time? Or are we so busy that we will just find something else which simply must get done?

These things keep me up at night.

Is it heredity? Personality traits? and are they learned, or innate?
My dad is extremely organized. My mom - not so much.

I just wonder what I could accomplish if I really tried to get things done ahead of time.

20. Nature or nurture, huh?
Maybe, like a lot of things, a mixture of both. But I think the emphasis is probably on nature. I know people who have always been organized, get things done early, and others like me, who seem the opposites. We both get things accomplished, albeit with different styles.

21. No, that depends on the nature of the work. Creative work such as mine,
for example, cannot just be summoned up ahead of time to make it more efficient. When I take on a new project, it has to rattle around in my brain (even if subconsciously) for a while...then, as the deadline approaches, it stops rattling and begins to take coherent form.

That's the process for me, anyway.

24. You are quite right, Redstone
Now, if I am doing something practical or technical, which is a large part of my job, the my nature gets in the way. I know exactly what needs to be done, what it has to look like, etc.

But, when I am indulging myself in something creative, like flower arranging or something, even if I have a deadline, things still have to rattle around in my head for awhile in order to come to fruition. Fortunately, when I'm doing wedding flowers, I usually have a lot of notice, and have the time to let ideas roll around the brain.

I think that often, I put off the bulletin because I'm not quite sure what direction I'll be taking the sermon.

But, other times, it's just laziness.

You do have a deadline of course, but you also have to give yourself room and time, to see what direction you are being lead for a particular sermon.

41. And I tread a fine line, it seems.
I can live with my procrastination, but sometimes it drives others crazy. At what point is it "creativity," and at what point is it simply not getting stuff done?

48. A good question, Rev
Here's how I can tell with myself. I'll use my wedding flower thing as an example. I know I have a deadline -- the wedding day. I have time to let ideas roll around in my head. I can't do the flowers until the day before because they have to be as fresh as possible. But, sometimes even when I know what I am going to do, I fitz around and don't get started at a decent time, so I end up finishing up at o'dark thirty. That is procrastination, when I know what I'm going to do, but I don't do it until the last minute. Does that make sense?

for they will be unfrazzled.

Blessed are those who wait until tomorrow, for their work follows them.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for pizza and beer, for they are only a phone call away.

Blessed are you when others mock your lifestyle, for they will never get it, and lead anal-retentive lives.

Blessed are the cheesemakers.... or purveyors of any dairy product, for that matter.

I like that, Rev! It would certainly capture folks' attention.

But I was thinking more along the lines of putting off important things in life, and the need to be de-fitzed so that life doesn't slip by while you're not paying attention, you know, like Lennon's "Life is what happens while your busy doing other things." (This is why you're the Rev and I'm just Mistress SeattleGirl)

23. I seem to be a mixture, my dear Rev.......
If I know I have things to do, and I don't spend too much time agonizing over them......

Then I can get right to them, and I feel so darned good!

OTOH, if I spend time agonizing, and fretting about all this garbage....

Then I can really get hung up.....and then it's a mess......

You'd think I'd learn...but NOOOOOOO.......

Oh well...just one step away from disaster! Sometimes......

33. I know a lot of people who can multi-task......
I am NOT one of them! Unless certain rigorous circumstances happen to apply......

And those rarely happen.....

So I plod along, one thing at a time. Oh well.....

You know, you just have to do what you can, where you are, and with what you have....

Anything more is just an exercise in frustration, IMHO...

And there's that annoying thing that hangs over your head, like if you don't go about doing something the way that the rest of the world does, then the problem is with you.

I've known all along that I march to a different drummer. I just get annoyed when others try to tell me I'm not listening to the music. :(

42. "Work expands to fill the time allotted to complete it."
It's one of Murphy's Laws. This is why I always wait until the last minute to do anything, because it considerably shortens the time spent on the task. Or at least that's what I tell myself. It's the efficiency. Yeah, that's the ticket.

The problem is we still remember being children when time stretched endlessly on and on, when if we had a week to do something, it was, like, forever. Now if someone tells me I have a month to do something, my typical response is, "OMG, I'll never get it done on time!"

73. I've been meaning to get back to you, but have been
busy.

So busy that I have this image left over from
getting ready to post this pic for a long dead thread
about first cars.

74. Computer time is a reward
for housework, or I'd never do it.

In school, I always waited as long as I could to hand in papers.

84. It took me a while, but I finally decided to come reply to your original
post in this thread. *sigh* I have a lab paper in Physics class due Tuesday. I have a cover letter and a thank you letter to write before Wednesday. I have two or three (in the fog of war known as hellacious scheduling in school, I can't remember how many test I have this upcoming week), tests coming up, and I can't even remember what is on my plate to do between now and tomorrow evening. I wish I had more time, so I could rest a little on the weekends before doing all those things. *sigh* I'll do some of it tomorrow. I am taking tonight to try to enjoy life a little.
