1. I've used:
A clean spiral notebook.
A book with a smooth cover.
A phonebook.

7. Only if you don't like your furniture
Optical mice may not need a mousepad to operate right, but if you have a nice desk it's still needed to protect the surface. My dad still has a beautiful 100 year old mohogany desk in his office and he had to have the top refinished after switching to an optical mouse a couple of years ago. It took two years, but eventually the constant movement of the mouse in such a small area began wearing through the finish. A $10 mousepad would have saved him a small fortune in refinishing costs.

3. My Kensington optical mouse...
works perfectly on my carpet and on the sheets on my bed. I haven't used a mouse pad for years.

9. I like a trackball
I do CAD on my puter and got so sick of reaching the edge of the mouse pad (before opticals were invented) I tried out a trackball and never went back. Poniting device never moves unless you want it to, thumb does all the work and you can spin that sucker really quick.
