Scariest movies ever
Looking to rent some really good terror flicks this weekend. Something with some content, not where blood and guts is the plot, although we did like Saw and Saw II. Not something like Blair Witch as we live in the middle of hundreds of acres of woods and did not find that scary at all, although my city brother-in-law just about peed his pants when we went for a walk in the back 40 after that movie came out.

Any suggestions? Thanks so much in advance.

46. What is it about Prince of Darkness?
It's a rather strange and not particularly action-packed movie about a giant canister of swirling green fluid in the basement of a building. And yet there's something about this movie that creeps you out and stays with you for days.

103. Have you seen Night Of The Demon?
It's by the same director as Cat People, Jacques Tourneur. It's also known as Curse Of The Demon. This is a wonderful little horror film from the 1950s, shot entirely in England and VERY dark and atmospheric, with shots of the gloomy English countryside and Stonehendge. It's about an American (solid actor Dana Andrews) who goes to England to debunk a Satanic cult and its leader who claims that he has special powers from the devil. Instead of relying on special effects, the director loads this low-budget movie with dark atmosphere. I love this film even more than Cat People. I think it should be on every horror movie fan's list of films to see.

Another oldie would be Eyes Without A Face (in French, Les Yeux Sans Visage) which is also loaded with dark and gloomy atmosphere. There is no film quite like this one. It's very special.

30. Most movies don't scare me, but Blair Witch did something weird to me.
I wasn't really scared watching it (just the normal apprehension that something was going to jump up and startle me) but the storyline creeped me out a bit. I went to bed after seeing it, not really thinking about it.

I woke up at 2AM, trembling, nearly crying. I was in sheer panic. This had never happened before, that I remember. I was afraid to roll over, afraid to even reach for the light. When I finally did, I just laid there and trembled. I slept with the light on for about two weeks, every night terrified, until it just went away. I guess it flipped some subconscious trigger or something. The only other movie that scared me nearly that bad was the Exorcist, but it wasn't so complete and guttural a fear.

Just felt like sharing that. Sorry. Back to your discussion! :-)

Not that big of a deal during the movie itself but it just really stuck with me afterward and then I woke during the night and "saw" that guy standing in the corner of the room. It was the weirdest reaction to a movie I have ever had. I thought I was the only one.

32. Polanski's paranoid apartment fantasies
Someone already mentioned Rosemary's Baby, but Repulsion and The Tenant are every bit as creepy and disturbing. They're more psychological thriller than straight horror, but they are scary, interesting and not gory, so they should fit.

105. I've seen most of the films on your list...
I think you would like Repulsion a lot. Polanski creates this atmosphere that starts at uncomfortable, and just keeps getting more claustrophobic and threatening throughout the film. Catherine Deneuve's performance is incredibly expressive too, especially considering that there is very little dialog.

Some interesting special effects for 1965 too (though it is not really a special effects kinda movie.)

Not recommended as a date movie.

And thanks for the welcome - been lurking regularly since before the 04 election, finally set up an account.

66. I like BOTH versions, but the Carpenter version is far superior...
and closer to the original story that the movie is based on.

There are some great moments in the original movie, such as when the scientists fan out in the formation of the "object" they find buried under the ice. (That is a CLASSIC horror movie moment.) But as soon as James 'Marshall Dillon' Arness makes his big appearance as the lunking vegetabloid villain, it's all over but the laughing.

The John D. Carpenter movie maintains the necessary tension throughout. It is about the most nerve-wracking movie I've ever seen.

53. Naw, it was in the early 60's.
Local theater used to show lots of old horror movies along with the output of Hammer Films. Kids ticket was 25 cents.

I have seen Female Trouble with Smell-O-Vision.:7

Is that why my favorite horror movie of all time is Fright Night?

One of the films that made me fall in love with the idea of horror films.

That's why I said I love the idea of horror film. Such a promising genre, but most of it sucks.

79. Very promising.
But most horror nowadays is nothing but gore. I can handle gore better than the next guy(or in my case, gal) but I need something more.
BTW-what do you think is your all-time favorite horror movie? I go back and forth too much.

80. Hmmm...
Probably "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me". David Lynch knows how to creep you the fuck out. It was weird, creepy, dark, and severely underrated. I wish he'd do more horror (though Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, while not strictly horror, were pretty fiucking creepy too). The Shining ranks really high too.

I was high the first time I saw it but Suspiria has to be one of my favorites. No real plot, acting sucks but Dario can set a mood!
I need to watch that again.

Too bad she had so few roles. I thought she was good in Carnival Of Souls, a creepy little movie that supposedly was an influence on Night Of The Living Dead.

69. She was fantastic in that role.
And you can definitely see where Romero got the influence for NotLD-there was definitely a lot of influence in the scene on the beach at the park. The way they moved and ran after her-the movie overall is a great trip.

There is a remake coming out this week, but the original one with Colleen Dewherst is really an on-the-edge-of-your-seat movie.

Right now, I'm watching "Joy Ride." That's pretty scary, also.

109. Here's one observation about The Ring (high praise and spoiler)
First off, unlike the DRECK that passes for screen writing today, the Ring was excellent.

But, in this day of computer special effects, I have to say, there was one very special moment in The Ring.

You see, we're all used to the CGI and other special effects so many movies just throw them in. We're desensitized.

So it was especially appreciated when the horse jumped out of the ferry.

For all of the "miracles" that are being done, this was one sequence where special effects, etc. never crossed my mind and I experienced it as it was intended.

Only after the movie did I realize that they couldn't have used a real horse, etc etc.
