Everybody knows that great artists are either insane or addicted to mind-altering substances.

3. For that matter, what ever happened to rock music |
|
There isn't a single major label that would touch the first Van Halen album if it was recorded today.

Eddie began to suck when he kicked out Roth. Roth was the necessary id to the VH ego. It brought balance and was antithetical to complacent AOR corporate rock, and was proof you could rock hard without succumbing to the fake hipper-than-thou ethos of most punk/new wave groups fashionable at the time. In other words, Devo AND Journey equally sucked.
After 1984, it went rapidly downhill into Journey/REO-land, aka AOR hell. And hair metal wan't far behind.

Little known music trivia: New Wave and post-punk have some very DISTINCT differences, and to even try and compare Journey and Devo is laughable at best. For someone so musically challenged as to try and lump them together in any way shape or form, I'm not surprised you'd see a "hipper-than-thou ethos" in the movement. Frankly they must have been.
I'm resisting writing a dissertation on the New wave/post punk issue. God, ugh, Van Halen?! JOURNEY?! Jesus.
