I hate censored movies on TV!!!! |
|
This morning I was quite excited when I discovered that TNT was showing "Donnie Brasco" at 10 a.m. Johnny Depp being my favorite actor and not having seen this movie, I was willing to give up my morning exercise to watch it. Now, "Donnie Brasco" is about the mob. Mobsters, at least in movies, don't use words and phrases like "freaking" and "he grabbed my butt." I also read somewhere that there was a scene where the mobsters cut off the legs of someone they've just killed. Not that that is necessarily the perfect kind of movie for me. But this santizied version of the movie went from handing Johnny Depp the saw Johnny Depp in a car in the blink of an eye. I'm kind of surprised they left the shooting scenes in at all.
But you know, it may not have been so bad if they were a bit better at doing the voice overs of toned down language. But it was so easy to tell where it was. The whole movie got quieter and whomever was doing the toned down language mumbled it before it came on super loud again with the actual actors voices.
So here's my idea...if you have to censor whole scenes and parts of dialogue of a movie...DON'T PUT IT ON AT TEN O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING!!!!!!!!!

2. one that genuinely puzzled me |
|
The network version of Robocop included most of the shootings. The was abundant red blood on the screen. However, they deleted the scene where the guy gets startled at the urinal and wets his pants. Why is urine a more offensive bodily fluid than blood?

The Cooler. The MPAA made them take a few seconds out. What was it? Simply a very beautiful woman standing there naked. Left in all the shots of people having their kneecaps shot off.
So violence and blood is OK, but nothing that might even remotely seem sexual. Hey the scene you refer to implies a penis doesn't it? How else do guys urinate? But a penis is a bad thang!
WTF? What is wrong with these people?

8. Reminds me of my experience with that movie. |
|
I saw it in the theater and was sitting next to this elderly woman (70s or so) and her middle-aged daughter.
When the scene between Maria Bello and William H. Macy in bed came on, the camera panned down to their "nether regions," and even though the actors strategically covered them up, the ladies next to me yelled out "Gross!"
I really wanted to turn to the old lady and say, "Lady, you did the exact same thing to produce the woman sitting next to you. Get a freaking grip." :)

10. Yeah what's the deal with that? |
|
We all have genitals and we all use them. What's the big deal?
Macy said about that movie that he didn't want his kids to see it. Not because of the sex (although he finds it hard to watch sex scenes even with his wife) but because of the extreme level of violence.
But somehow violence is OK, but nudity or sexuality? No can do. I would much rather my daughter watch people making love than watch them hurting each other.

3. Totally fucking pisses me off |
|
The whole censorship thing drives me insane.
1. I am an adult. I do not need anyone else to make decisions about what I can see, hear, read, etc. 2. Responsible parenting. It ain't that hard.
The reruns of Sex and The City are driving me crazy - they drop entire plot lines!
Ugh! My 11 year old nephew was at my parents' house. So was I. There was a show about childbirth. The words "cervical dialation" were used and my father made me turn it off to protect my nephew. Why? Protect him from what? The realities of childbirth are certainly something he needs to know.
Sorry, end of rant. It just makes my blood boil.

11. I agree about Sex and The City... |
|
I don't get HBO so I didn't get to see the shows in the original, but sometimes when I watch the reruns I get the distinct feeling that something very important is being left out. And then I hear certain things and I think to myself, "They blur out someone's middle finger (not necessarily on Sex and the City) but they leave that in!!!! WTF is that?!"
No need to apologize about the rant...it makes my blood boil too!

5. One of reasons why I never watch good movies on regular TV. |

Its really kills the integrity of the film. An insult to my intelligence. Only DVD's and the pay channels.

Canadian customs makes me angry. But one of the people on the movie "censorship committee" told me that what she had seen hadn't hurt her and had led to extremely interesting conversations. But that's pretty typical of Canadians - they don't have the same drive to control other people that Americans do.

12. I do too, usually. I can't watch "Dazed & Confused" on TV. |
|
I have to watch the DVD instead.
And "Breakfast Club"? Bender spends a lot of time saying, "Forget you!"

13. The one that really gets me is 'American Graffiti' |
|
I've seen it about 20 times in the theatre or on tape/DVD and about another 20 on teevee, and there's actually one scene where they edited "geez" — I guess because it might be taken as a slam at Jesus?
But then there's another scene where they changed "Jesus" to "geez."
