Poll question: Clams. Raw, Steamed, Chowdered or Fried? How do you like them?

I've always been a stickler from the fried variety. Growing up in the Boston area, you can get fried clams anywhere. Not so much down here in SoCal though.

5. The bellies are good too.
My parents would go for take-out fried clams every Friday. We were catholics and back then eating meat on a friday would send you to hell. There was this little place in Derry NH called "The Clam Box". The stand actually looked like a take-out box overflowing with fried clams. They;d drive 20 mile out of their way to pick those babies up on fridays.

7. Clam-O-Rama at the Maine Diner in Wells, ME covers all of it
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 10:21 PM by BrotherBuzz
It's clams everything - chowder, clam strips, whole fried clams, and a clam cake. I like clams!

Oh, the Maine Diner is close enought to spit at the Bush* people in neighboring Kennebunkport.

10. How about the first three ways?
I'll take my clams in the following heirarchy
First: Steamers. Being from Massachusetts myself I should point out that one should pronounce it as "steemiz".

I'll tie chowdered and fried. If fried clams are done right, they are truly ambrosia. Chowdered is great too.
But know this!
IF someone is going to serve me New England clam chowder they had Better f_____g made it right!!!!
Curse you if use that swill from a can or took shortcuts!!!!

Being a New Englander I have very high standards when it comes to clam chowder. To me the chowder Legal Seafood serves if "adequate". I won't puke it out later.

Getting really good N.E. clam chowder made the right way is getting pretty hard these days.

Linguini with clams sauce? Eh, take it or leave it.

15. On somebody else's plate, and far away from me.
I'm allergic to shellfish.

Clams, though, at least I can be around if somebody's eating them. Shrimp, you gotta eat in another room. I can't be anywhere near them.

Besides, did you ever see a shrimp with the legs on? Tell me that isn't a big old bug. Yuck.

16. Steamahs are know by a less polite name
If you've ever dug them you'll understand why they're also called pissahs.
And for those people from away, steamers aren't any old clams steamed. They are soft-shell clams, period. Accept no substitute.

Kelly's on Revere Beach, The Clam Box, and Woodman's in Essex all make pretty good fried clams. Even Newick's does a pretty good job. The real trick is to get them homemade.

I won't get into a chowdah war here but I will say that the Maine ones aren't the same as the Boston ones and Rhode Islanders make their own versions.

18. In New England, they'll throw any ocean critter in a pot of warm milk.
Lobster or shrimp stew is the height of simplicity and elegance -- the meat is gently warmed in milk or cream with a dash of spice if you must, but otherwise that's it. Right now is fresh shrimp season in Maine - small, sweet, never seen a freezer shrimp. They are so good.

The best fish chowder in Boston for many years was at the No Name restaurant.

20. Yes, no name was my old college "post final exam" haunt, we used
to go to the harbor and get bigass fried seafood platters there, back then there was no placard that said "no name" on it, and they didn't have an alcohol license so it was strictly BYOB.
