My Health - Continuing saga.

Well as most of you I have serious health problems lately. All of my symptoms point to MS, which is quite difficult to diagnose.

Anyhow, I just wanted to tell you guys that I just had a cervical MRI (neck) and a spinal MRI and although neither one showed any "MS abnormalitis) like my brain MRI, there are other problems.

I must now have an CT scan of my lungs, because a "spot" showed up on this MRI. I am not that worried bec MRIs traditionally are very sensitive and show everything. I gave up smoking 7 years ago, but there is an abnormality.

Also, while doing the MRIs, it was revealed that I have two complex cysts (solid and liquid...to make it simple) on my thyroid gland. This calls for an ultrasound. Yeah, okay, I will do it - knowing that most cysts are benign, but they might have to be removed. I HATE surgery. Scared as hell of it. It's a control issue...LOL!

Wish me luck. Have my lung MRI and chest x-ray on Monday.

This year sucks big time. As I write this, one of my acquaintances is dying of colon cancer. She is not in pain, but hell she is only 64. Now I know that sounds old to you younger DUers, but once you get "up there" you realize how young 64 is.

and try and relax! I had a friend who just had the thyroid surgery and her cysts were benign...according to the doc most of the time they are... so I will think of you and pray that you recover quickly.

I am sorry to hear about your friend...that is too young.

2. Your Thyroid Cysts

Two years ago I had a solid thyroid cyst which turned out to be papillary cancer. Most thyroid cancers are papillary, thank god, because they are easy to treat. My endochrinologist told me that when doctors are asked what type of cancer they "want"...most doctors say, "Papillary Thyroid Cancer." I had my surgery done at the Mayo Clinic. I enjoyed lounging in the hospital bed for one day. Now all that happens is that I take a small synthyroid pill each morning.

Good Luck Caledesi. If you end up with a scary dianosis or a freaky prognosis be sure to keep your medical treatment options open. When I found out that I had a large, bloody, mass, I high-tailed it over to the Mayo Clinic in Rocester, Minnesota. It was an 85 mile drive from Minneapolis. My insurance paid for some of it. The uncovered portion we paid back in small monthly sums with zero interest.

4. Take care of yourself

be especially kind to yourself - to give your self a peace of mind while you go through all of this. I strongly believe in the mind/body connection - the mind can not control the body and its health, but our frame of mind can greatly exacerbate things (negatively) through stress (and related chemicals generated by the body through stress not to mention the chemicals - including comfort foods and the like - that we are more prone to put into our bodies to 'cope' with the stress.)

6. my mom had the thyroid cyst thing. It should turn out okay, hon.

The divergence between the scans might work in your favor.
I would always err on the side of hopefulness. Doctors will
always tell you the worst case along with what usually
turns out to be the way it all goes. Having had cancer in
the family and strokes, a determined mind can defeat anything.

7. One thing I learned in life. . .

is that we are our thyroid! You will feel much better after surgery and treatment.

8. I know a few people with MS and they live pretty well in spite of it.

Once you get past this stage and learn how to live with the disease itself, you'll see how soon you feel better. More good wishes to you, caledesi.

10. Make sure they give you a test for Vit. B-12 deficiency.

Sometimes a B-12 deficiency (Pernicious Anemia) looks like MS. There is a blood test you can get but you may have to ask for it. Good luck!

I was wondering but didn't want to be nosey. Have any of your docs suggested the problem may be those cysts on your thyroid? The thyroid mediates all adrenaline in the body and can wreak havoc on your extremities (perticularly upper extremities).

13. The cysts on my thyroid have not been addressed yet. I have

to have an ultrasound. We wait. <sigh>

Once the diagnosis is in, and the proper course of action is taken, you'll do well. I just know it by the fire in your belly, caledesi.
