1) Everything has to be about you. As you said upthread, you have to be an attention whore. The bigger the drama queen, the better.

2) You have to bare your soul in your posts.Tell us the down and dirty (or at least make up plausible stuff). Talk about failed relationships, bad dates, embarassing sexual encounters, periods of depression, chronic childhood diseases, traumatic experiences, the time you got screwed over and were fired from a job, your first kiss, how you lost your virginity, a fucked-up teacher, a right-winger you have to deal with, your horrible experience with a contractor, your breasts are too big (or too small), you vicodin addiction, etc. People love that stuff. They can relate. It also gives them a "hook" by which to remember you, even if you've made it up. It fleshes you out, and you become more than somone who processes words about politics. You have to invent a persona. "The more sexual innuendo, the better. I can tell you've caught onto the sex thing by your "who do I sleep with" comment.

2) You gotta be a cat lover.

3) Write about the most mundane things: your conversation with someone you stood next to in line at the grocery store, someone who tailgated you on the freeway, the new design of a box of cereal that you're not fond of, you came home after a bad day and ate two gallons of ice cream and a package of fig newtons, your newspaper always ends up in the bushes, your experience trying to get a live human while phoning the phone company, a rude cashier at the drugstore, heaing a certain song while driving, etc. You can go two ways with this: a profound statement, or venting. Venting is better. Everybody likes venting they agree with. And don't be afriad to write about something so mundane and stupid that you don't get any replies. It comes with the territory.

4) Make known far and wide on DU all your favorite things or pet peeves. Such as: you're diehard Syracuse football fan, you're a Jungian, you love a certain kind of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, you're into collecting Fender Stratocasters, you're a converted Buddhist, you have a thing for Jake Gyllenhall or Michael Stipe or James Woods, you're an expert on white birch.

5) Post, post, and post!!! I would guess a couple hundred times a day. Take over threads and get in "conversations" with other popular buddies in you "clique." The more inside jokes and emoticons the better.

6) Ignore DU posters who aren't popular. But with your homies, you smooch, i.e., kiss ass (as somone else in this thread said).

7) And did I say make every post about you, and write a lot about sex?

I would say 'popular' posters are ones who are able to show their personality online. It's tough to do, but it allows people to recognize them.

Yes in order to be part of the community here you've got to participate. One can't expect people to know you if you don't post. But there are people who by their nature do not draw a crowd, online or off. Socializing is a skill. Some people are gifted in that area while others are not. You have been around enough to know that folks will feel comfortable posting to you if you just come in and post to them and be yourself. Use humor and be kind, it is pretty simple.

Lately, the lounge is so full of piss and vinegar, folks are scared of posting to those they don't know or the ones that have been nasty to others. So folks stick to posting to DUers that they know, that they are comfortable with, that don't snark or mock them.

I would say you have a couple of lounge haters (maybe trolls) in this thread, judging the lounge and mocking lizards. Their evaluations are wrong, the lounge is like any small gathering place, you give what you get and when you make friends, you open up to them and tell of your bad days.

Some folks look for drama and control, others just look for laughter and understanding and acceptance.

Just be yourself Faye and make friends, one at a time.

Remember it's not about popularity, it's about comfort. The golden rule really does apply.

Almost 3 months longer than me. Wow. When I checked, you had 354 posts. That's fine. I expect that you use DU as a news source. I do that too, but I've also decided to make some friends. I've actually met people on DU, talked to them, been in their homes, shared a meal. Do I feel more connected to them than someone who is merely a screen name to me. Yes. I think that's natural.

I've also participated in enough conversations with other DUers (who I haven't met) that I feel a connection there too.

You always feel more comfortable at a party when you know people. Standing in a corner waiting to be noticed isn't all that productive. Introduce yourself. Join in on a conversation.

but one "lounger hater" post upthread cracked me up - and frankly there is some truth to that, as well. Having spent time in the lounge over a period of years I found some of the descriptors - humorous and ringing a bit true. Perhaps not about all in the lounge but certainly fits patterns of some who have come and gone over the years.
