I need lots of good thoughts...
That is: One of our horses does. He is very sick. Cannot swallow, the membranes in the mouth are badly swollen and so is the whole "chinline", so to speak. Two vets have been there and have no idea what's going on. He's gotten Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory stuff but so far no improvement. He seems to be very much in pain, and if he can't swallow he won't make it much longer. He needs good thoughts very badly!

20. I am really sorry to hear about your horse. I hope things turn around for
you. I have a good friend that says keep up the antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications but feeding him a bucket of "hot mash" with a half a cup of warm linseed oil in it.
He had horses, here in California, with ropes of mucus hanging from a swollen mouth, after eating alfalfa with either a black widow spider or scorpion in it. It helped a great deal.

Sending all our hopes and thoughts your way.

41. Thanks, and no, he couldn't have. What I thought - the only idea
I've had after checking the internet for hours - is maybe Stachybotryotoxicosis ore something like that. Our other horse is fine and they get the same food, but then again the other one can take a lot more generally speaking, grew up almost wild in a large herd in France, and they do say that horses react individually to all forms of Mykotoxicosis. An allergy it's not, the vets say. Thanks for your good thoughts!

31. Have they given him an antihistimine?
Sounds like he is possibly having an allergic reaction? Maybe even a steroid....

Older horses seem to react to everything so much more dramatically than they might have when they were younger. Did you get new hay or a different feed recently?

We lost my daughter's first pony this past summer, she was 29 and should have been with us for a few more years but she rolled under the fence during the night and got wedged. Found her in the morning still alive, but barely. We discovered she had have damaged her spine and couldn't get up after we dismantled the fence around her to give her space to get up. Alas.

Losing the fine old ones is so hard. I will send good thoughts for your old guy that today is not his day and that you have many more years ahead.

Terrible what happened to your pony! Especially since she was still good to go at her old age! I have always feared those accidents.

Adonis has been having trouble with loose teeth for a year and a half but we soften his food and otherwise he was good to go. We got him 12 years ago and he was ripe for the slaughterhouse then - only because he was kept in a box which was so bad for his Arthrosis. After we got him - as company for mine and to teach the SO to ride because he was an experienced sport horse of local renown, and we got him only because the old owners knew me and the way I keep horses - he never had a problem with lameness again because we keep them in an open stable with a hectar of land; they can move about freely at all times.

Just last week I thought that dear Adonis could easily get to be 27, 28 in spite of his teeth (he's 23 now) and how everybody around would be surprised and glad to learn that this horse, esteemed by everybody who ever saw him, was still alive and WELL. Maybe I tempted the gods

on edit: Even though he tends to have allergic reactions this isn't one, that's the only thing the vets are convinced of.

43. So nice of you :)
:loveya:

I think he's doing a little better! He seems a little livelier. I make a mashy mess of his food and he can swallow it, but just barely. He's drinking his chamomile tea (our other one is jealous and thinks that chamomile tea is great, too). His hay he cannot eat which is very worrisome, but he keeps trying (which is an improvement because Saturday he'd just turn away from his food after the second try). I'm hoping for the best and I do think the improvement is due to all the good wishes, so please keep it up a while longer, willya?

Unfortunately my SO (the true owner of that horse) doesn't believe in improvement and I think maybe he doesn't WANT to believe it. After all it's an old gentleman who costs us a a lot of money and time, his teeth have been wobbly for over a year... and the SO comes from a farm where it's unthinkable to keep an animal just for the fun of it. The vet was supposed to come to-day but didn't show, now he's supposed to come to-morrow. I hope he'll say with me that the horse is, if only a tiny bit, better.

And thanks for the meditation - and thank Henri the cat, too!

Adonis seems to be doing a little better. He can swallow water and watery food. Still can't eat his hay which is very bad, but he keeps trying where on Saturday he'd just turn away from it. Drinks chamomile tea and to-day he even played for a second or two with the bucket. My SO - the owner of the horse - doesn't believe in improvement but I'm certain (even though it's only a very little). He's still very much in danger, though, so please keep up your loving healing thoughts for some days - please?

48. Several of the older horses that board with me don't eat hay at all
They eat beet pulp soaked in water, 3x/day. One of the old girls (33 years old) hasn't eaten any hay for more than 8 years since she doesn't have hardly any teeth left at all!

I am so pleased to hear about the improvement. I think women are more intuitive about whether the horse is getting better than men. Sometimes the changes are so subtle....

49. riderinthestorm, you just did me a world of good.
That no-hay had me worried so much! And here you tell me you have horses that have been doing without for years. I was so afraid he didn't get enough fiber. Beets? What kind? Sugar beet pulp or what? I'd very much like to know (Sugar beets they already get, but very little, in addition to the pellets)!
And thank you for the good thoughts! Every animal is worth the effort, but if you could meet him - such a grand old gentleman, respected by every one who ever met him. :) It has happened more than once when we were riding that a totally strange pedestrian or byciclist stopped us and asked: "But isn't that Adonis? Still around! I remember..."

51. I'm not sure what the equivalent would be in Europe
but in the US it's very common. It's ground up beets, in a dried form. You can get it with molasses or without here in the States. Depending on if your horse has thyroid issues (Cushings disease, another common old-timer disease) would dictate whether you want the sugar or not.

The horses at my farm typically get a 3lb scoop full of the dried material (that probably weighs less than a pound since it's very light) at each feeding. Put in double the water (like rice) and let it soak for 30 - 60 minutes depending on the temp outside.

I have never had a horse who hasn't loved the stuff. They slurp it up like wet oatmeal.

And yup, one horse has been on it 8 years. Another one has been on it 4 years and the last one just started last year. They still go out and graze on grass although the oldest mare just probably gums it LOL! She at least goes through the motions and appears relatively content.

two very sharp teeth to-night which will relieve him immensely (here's a big hooray to vets who stand in the pitch dark at freezing temperatures, miner's lamp on the forehead, shoving all of their naked and freezing underarm into the mouth of a skittish, 600 pound horse).

He'll have to do a complete tooth job - two teeth will have to be removed altogether, some others treated somehow. It will be difficult - we will have to rent a generator because we don't have electricity, and it will be immensely expensive which the SO will absolutely hate because he thinks when animals get so sick we should let them go and not put time and effort and money into keeping them alive - BUT he will live a while longer. Thank you, myrna minx!

What kind of work are you having done??!!

I can't even imagine it! Are the teeth abscessed? Why can't they get the teeth out without a generator?? Impacted? Infected? Is that what's causing the swelling in the jaw?

:scared:

With 40 horses at my farm at any given time, over 20+ years, I've seen a lot of dental work done on horses. I can't even visualize what's happening....

65. The teeth probably could come out without electricity.
But that vet has modern equipment and insists on using it... which is probably for the best, so I won't roll my eyes. He thinks he has to work on all teeth and can do more precise work with the electric rasp etc. Of course that also means that the poor Adonis has to be heavily sedated and I hate that. They wobble around on unsteady legs and every time I think they'll break a leg for sure... I'm a coward at heart, I found out when I saw him do this the first time. And yes, the teeth are supposed to be causing the swelling. Wish it were allover already *sigh*

47. If there is a God...
which I believe there is, may He/She/It bless you and your horse.

50. Since there is a god/goddess, in which I firmly believe, he/she
will hear your wish, and I thank you :)

60. He's a bit better, GoddessOfGuiness!
And I am so very grateful. There's more trouble ahead, we just found out that he needs a complete teeth job which will be very difficult and expensive and and... BUT he'll have another summer and hopefully many more! Wish springtime would hasten, it's a difficult time for sick animals living in an open stable. Thank you for those good vibes!

I just had a root canal done on Monday, so I can sympathize with your poor baby. Here's hoping all goes well!:hug::hug:

61. Is there something in his life that he doesn't accept?
That is, can't swallow? Just a thought. Sometimes metaphors, especially around injury and illness are key to understanding them. Is there something he needs to spit up, so to speak?

67. Hm, I don't really think so .. he is the
boss and already makes the rules and gets most of the attention. Old horses very often have problems with their teeth.
