The RetroLounge Daily Poem Thread (Sun 1/29/06)
The Kiss

She pressed her lips to mind.
— A typo

How many years I must have yearned
for someone's lips against mind.
Pheromones, newly born, were floating
between us. There was hardly any air.

She kissed me again, reaching that place
that sends messages to toes and fingertips,
then all the way to something like home.
Some music was playing on its own.

Nothing like a woman who knows
to kiss the right thing at the right time,
then kisses the things she's missed.
How had I ever settled for less?

I was thinking this is intelligence,
this is the wisest tongue
since the Oracle got into a Greek's ear,
speaking sense. It's the Good,

defining itself. I was out of my mind.
She was in. We married as soon as we could.

Stephen Dunn

5. They say it's better to have loved, and lost
then to have never loved at all. Neither one is that appealing to me.

did neither and needs to be pummelled...

10. OK. I'll hold him. You can pummell him.
And then we can go out and drink whiskey together.

12. I've never had enough to drink that I couldn't walk
Although, there have been a few occasions when the line may not have been absolutely straight. But if you insist...

Don't you drink? Or did I choose the wrong poison?

14. I'm way behind you then
I've only been seriously drunk twice. First time when I was about 29 and last year when those Boston folks corrupted me. (They're a VERY bad influence.)

23. not a toss off -- a wall.
really good poets seem almost obsessively obsessed with what happens to us on that bone deep level.

when you hit something really, really hard -- it shakes -- you stuns -- certainly stops you -- and it stops us with that line.

20. This one hits home, RL
"How had I ever settled for less?" Settling is not good. It is living less than fully in every aspect of life. I am tired of settling.
