Poll question: What is Your Favorite Musical Instrument to Listen to And/Or Play?
Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 01:50 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
I'm so flipping bored, y'all...How about another music-related poll? I want to know what your favorite, favorite instrument to listen to and/or play is. I just put some common instruments down, so if yours isn't listed, well, that's what the "Other" option is for. :D :P

For me, piano takes the cake hands down. Love to play it, love to listen to it. It's closely followed by guitar (though I don't play--:D), clarinet, and saxophone.

:D

Thanks, y'all--

1. Guitar
I might be biased because I've been playing it for years (not very well). But I just think it's such a versatile instrument because it can be equally beautiful in both rock, jazz and classical music.

Piano would be a close second. I always wanted to learn how to play but my hands are just too stubby to be any good at it

3. Yeah, like I said, I love guitar.
It really is a cool instrument, especially in jazz. ;)

Someday I hope to learn it, but I have to get through piano first. (At least, that's what the 'rents say, and at this stage, my life is in their hands..... x() Hell, I just want to play basically any instrument. :D

13. No, sorry....
I learned to read music at my grandmother's knees. :D I know there are books out there, but I can't think of any off the top of my head...

Sorry I can't be of more help! Maybe the Musicians' Group can, though that forum doesn't move very quickly at all.... x( Or maybe an Amazon search will yield something.....

5. To listen to.....the violin.

8. Violin is really pretty, of course.
:D

I'm not a wild flute fan, but that can sound cool, as well, in the right hands.

21. For listening, I like the violin, too
For me, no other instrument can convey the depth and range of emotion as the violin. Meditation, by the French composer Massenet is one of the most breathtaking pieces of violin music ever written. I love the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin, the Chaconne being an extremely powerful piece and when I first heard it, I couldn't believe it was just one violin playing all of that.

I like to play jazz guitar, fingerstyle on nylon strings. It's my main hobby.

12. Of the instruments I play, I'm best at bass.

But I like playing drums the most.

I'm lucky I have a violin player in my band...and no instrument moves me more than piano.

14. Awesome drum set, there.
:D I always thought it would be cool to be a talented drummer.

I love playing piano.... I'm good at clarinet, too, and I'm learning sax, but neither sax nor clarinet makes me feel high like piano does. And I've been playing piano for the least amount of time.

19. Awesome. Thanks!
I never learned piano bacuse I didn't want to remove the "aura" around it. It's hard to explain; once I learned how to play the drums, the mystique around it was removed and I was less and less impressed by other drummers. The same with guiatr: once I learned how to play, I found fewer and fewer players who could move me. It's like learning the secrets of a good magician; once you know how he levitates his assistant, it's difficult to remain awed by it.

That's why I never learned piano; somethings I want to remain mysterious so that I can continue being moved by them.

23. That's cool, and I think that makes sense.
But for me....What can I say? I just HAVE to play the piano. Only as a hobby, true, but I just HAVE to. It's a weird compulsion. And the more I learn about it, the more I go, "Wow. How the HELL do people DO that?" It certainly makes me appreciate the sheer labor--of love, admittedly, but still labor--that professional pianists pour into their work.

15. Musical Saw
The most underrated musical instrument that I can think of. It's anything but a novelty sound in the hands of an accomplished musician.

34. The harp
Something about the sound is relaxing and soothing. Especially when the musician plays the low notes. I have a soft spot for bass lines.

37. Hammond organ
I also play bass and guitar, and just enough mandolin to be dangerous/annoying...but when I sit down at one of my Hammonds all is right with the world. Nothing like that rich growl through the Leslie rotary speaker...rockin'!

38. Don't lump the bass in with the guitar;
at least the acoustic bass, the string bass, the real thing. It's a completely different animal, and for me works best with a piano and a couple of good horn players.
