but I'm too old for you.

I hate it. There are songs that are better than others, but if I never had to hear any of it again - EVER- I'd be just fine.

I ended up listening to Pantera in my dorm room at 2.30 AM.

Turns out Pantera really sucks, too.

6. Worse than Christmas music...
KID'S Christmas Music... my nephew TORTURED me a couple years ago with endless repetitions of the Elmo Christmas album.

And the WORST Christmas song ever is "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." NO debate.

17. You need Christmas parody music!
I suggest you get on some of the song networks on IRC (don't use Kazaa) and pick up MP3's of the following songs:

"Holy S***, It's Christmas" by Red Peters

The following songs from the South Park "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics" album:
"Mr. Hankey, The Christmas Poo" (title edition)
"Merry F***ing Christmas" (by Mr. Garrison, the teacher, teaching Bush-style internationalism)
"O Holy Night" by Eric Cartman (as greedy as Halliburton)

Many of the songs from Bob Rivers's parody albums:
"There's a Santa Who Looks A Lot Like Elvis"
"Teddy, the Red-Nosed Senator" (perhaps a little pointed, but I'm sure some DU'ers aren't in love with him)
"Carol of the Bartenders" (why listen to bells? An anti-drunk driving song)
"I Am Santa Claus" (revised lyrics to the heavy metal song "Iron Man")
"A Message from the King" (more Elvis Christmas stuff)
"There's Something Stuck Up In My Chimney" (if you saw "Gremlins," you know what this is about)
"We Wish You Weren't Living With Us" (a traditional, given new meaning)
"The Twelve Pains of Christmas"

And if you go to this link: http://genres.mp3.com/music/comedy/ you can find lots of comedy Christmas songs done by amateurs.

By the way, I do not condone downloading of free music from the Internet. I fully support the right of right-wing companies that control our media to make enormous profits off us, while screwing the performing artists and writers out of the money they deserve, that they never get when we pay full price anyway.

(But seriously, if you like what you hear free on mp3.com, buy the CD's straight from the artists. They actually get money that way.)

19. Not the stuff I listen to!

Check out any of James Brown's three Xmas albums some time.

Or the awesome PHIL SPECTOR CHRISTMAS ALBUM from 1963.

Or the Ventures' surf instrumental take on "Sleigh Ride."

Or Amos Milburn's "Let's Make Christmas Merry, Baby."

Or Mabel Scott's "Boogie-Woogie Santa Claus."

Or Weird Al Yankovic's hilarious "Christmas At Ground Zero."

Or the Youngsters' "Christmas In Jail."

Or the Moonglows' "Hey Santa Claus."

Or....

Well, you get the idea.

20. NO! And, aren't these posts clever, and mean.
I remember my mom, my uncles and aunts. Gone now. I remember singing carols with my daughter when she was 6; she is now 27. Laugh now. When your family is gone, perhaps you will have a different perspective. And for all the cynicism in the world, Merry Christmas, my friends.

31. I LOVE Christmas music!
all of it. The carols. All the popular artist covers. The rock/rockabilly/country versions. All of it. I start playing it now and don't let up until New Year's. Drives my family crazy. Keep it in the car, take it to work, play it at home. My co-workers now have another reason to hate me.

33. I agree 100%...
What's wrong with a bit of sentimentality and nostalgia,at least this time of year? I feel the same way as you do about...it reminds of people, and of times, that are no more. Cynicism is overrated,in my opinion,as well as being tedious. The idea that cynicism=coolness is a very dated one. I don't have any of my family with me anymore, but I do have my memories..and Christmas music is so much tied in with them:)

21. CLARIFICATION
Commercial Christmas Music sucks.

I love the advent music we sing at church and the nativity hymms at midnight mass on Christmas. Its some of the best music ever.

Most great European composers of the last thousand years wrote religious music, much of it about Christmas.

22. Yes, Christmas music sucks filthy ass...
Especially the Top Ten Most Often Played Carols, and you know the ones I mean. I'm sure you're sick of them too. That said, you can find some good ones in the Oxford Book of Carols, but you can't get *those* on a CD to stick in your parents' player when you're forced to do The Christmas Thing, y'a plus encore at their house, AGAIN, where instead it's seven not very different versions of "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Mary's Boy Child," "Jingle Bells," and four or five different pieces of medieval dance music that had Christianified lyrics grafted on by hyper-pious Victorians with Frankenstein Complexes. (Yes, I mean "Greensleeves," and I ain't even gonna deign to mention that *other* illegitimate title! You Victorian weenies, that's Henry VIII you're fuckin' with! Leave the man's posterity alone! Only good thing he ever gave the human race, and *you* have to mess it up!)

Pardon me to the poster who said "Enjoy it while you have it," but I've been sick of Christmas now for 10 years, and I don't see the situation changing any at all. If I didn't HAVE to do it as a family obligation, I wouldn't do it at all. Christianity bothers me, and the so-called "holiday" stuff is just Christianity with the more overt identifying marks stripped off it.

And a raucous BAH HUMBUG to all!

The melodies are absolutely beautiful and the lyrics both fun and meaningful. Some modern singers have done a good job, but I prefer the Bing Crosby-type stuff and the choirs.

24. It is the worst thing ever, EVER put on this earth
in the ways of music. I mean, not to denounce or belittle any religon, I thought that Christian music was awful. But in many X-Mas songs they've seemed to enhance Christian music into easy listening shit with crappy lyrics. Every time I go past the Target Christmas section I yell at people who press the CD samples for X-Mas songs. Everywhere I go...any store, almost any music station, it's on. And though it's only on for two months before X-Mas (talk about early), it's like friggin torture.
And then they're cheesy songs like "Rocking Around the X-Mas Tree" and stuff. Then they're the American Idol X-Mas specials and all these "hip" artists coming out with new ways to dilute an already crappy song with even more crap! It's just awful.

30. Okay, that one and "Have Youself A Merry Little Christmas"...
are the exceptions. When I was a little kid, I used to think that the singer of "HYAMLK" was a mistress (who looked like Angie Dickinson) singing the song to her (absent) married pilot lover who was spending the holiday with his family. Yes, I had a very lurid imagination as a child.

35. I used to hate xmas music
I worked in a store that started playing it on thanksgiving and didn't stop. Then later, when I used to shop in malls, it was endless, the same damn things over and over. And yes, it seemed to produce that trained responce to buy and associate the music with the commercial holiday. Also, since I'm not christian (although I enjoy the holiday, after all most cultures have a winter holiday), the really religious stuff annoyed me.

Nowadays though, since I haven't been in a mall, or Walmart, or places like that for years, I've started enjoying the music again. I put on my first holiday album today and my granddaughter and I danced around the room to it. Then we sorted through some of the tree ornaments. Tonight I am making my gift making list to some celtic holiday music.
