WEBMONKEYS: Get news.Google.com Search Results as RSS
I created a perl RSS tool for querying http://news.google.com automatically.

You simply append your query to the url and it will return news.google.com results formated as RSS for easy inclusion to your web site.

ie.

url = http://class.globalfreepress.com/gn2rss.html?q=Diebold
(q=QUERY)

GFP Adds Google Headlines To Most Sections
See regularly updated headlines that are 'Hand-Picked' for that Section ;->

So as readers browse GFP sections they will also see regularly updated headlines that are context sensetive for that section.

Two of my favorites are the National Security section...
http://new.globalfreepress.com/index.pl?section=NationalSecurity

that has headlines related to National Security and the USA Patriot Act

and...
http://new.globalfreepress.com/index.pl?section=evoting

that section has headlines from E-voting and Diebold

let me know - DU mail - if you have any problems/questions/suggestions :hi:

peace

1. What's RSS? (for non-programmers)

What is RSS?

Rich Site Summary (RSS) is a lightweight XML format designed for sharing headlines and other Web content. Think of it as a distributable "What's New" for your site. Originated by UserLand in 1997 and subsequently used by Netscape to fill channels for Netcenter, RSS has evolved into a popular means of sharing content between sites (including the BBC, CNET, CNN, Disney, Forbes, Motley Fool, Wired, Red Herring, Salon, Slashdot, ZDNet, and more). RSS solves a myriad of problems webmasters commonly face, such as increasing traffic, and gathering and distributing news. RSS can also be the basis for additional content distribution services.

3. nice... :)
This is sweet..been eyeing this for a while now and been urging them to just put a news api in for content syndication. This works well, no doubt. I can see myself using this for a temp solution till I get some of my own time. Thanks.

5. thanks
until i get the code online anyone can use it - 1x every 30 min per query - then you can install it on your own machine ;->

i wrote it with HTML::Mason so I need to make a generic perl version - unless someone wants the code and try them selves

one feature i want to add is a flag for HTML results insted of RSS for folks who don't have an RSS enabled site.

4. I have been wondering about RSS... how do I install it?
I just know HTML... Do I just cut and paste that in the body of my HTML script or do I have to upload it as a separate file?

6. RSS is actually XML formated to serve up headlines
if you view the source - rightClick on webpage - of this link...
http://class.globalfreepress.com/gn2rss.html?q=Diebold

you'll be able to see the formatting better.

now you will need some code to read that format and translate it to html so everyone can see it as a linked headline.

see wonks link above for more info on rss.

but i am planning on adding a feature to the application so that it returns HTML instead of RSS if you pass in a FORMAT flag...

FORMAT=HTML

http://class.globalfreepress.com/gn2rss.html?q=Diebold&FORMAT=HTML

that way you wouldn't need any special code to include the custom headlines on your site.

but that is for another day... soon ;->
