Did anybody read the following book?
The Sorrows of Empire: Militarism, Secrecy, and the End of the Republic by Chalmers Johnson?

What did you think of it?

...and have always known we are an empire. Our policies are geared to maintain the empire. It want be permanent, however long it may last, since eventually, we will be subject to factors that have ended all empires, i.e., external aggression, external alliances, monetary and economic collapse and other economic ills which will make it impossible to maintain a military on it's current level. In addition, other factors include a populous that really doesn't want to have to fight, themselves, to maintain the empire. At some point, the U.S. simply want be able to afford the armies it is paying, to fight it's fight. And at that point, it want have the economic clout to force other nations to help fight it's fights.

3. I did.
Very informative, though a bit dry. i.e., basically, it's a laundry list of our empire/bases, etc., but I would still recommend it.
