25. We were just talking about what they were going to do the outside shots
on...You know the pretty pictures in between commercials? I'm betting the RenCen, The baseball stadium, the Fox and then they'll mover outward to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House and Meadowbrook stuff. I was just down in the bowels of Detroit doing Field Reviews...and for once I wished I had a CCW permit. It breaks my heart because there are some beautiful old homes. :(

and my heart breaks all the time when i am in downtown detroit. i never saw it when those houses were in good repair...it's almost impossible to imagine it as the vibrant, living city it once was.

part of me had hoped that the city would rally around the all star game and the superhowl this year....and that we'd go through a renaissance similar to what Cleveland saw a decade ago. but all we got were half-hearted superficial fixes. i now think there is no hope whatsoever for that city.

oh - and on edit - what's a CCW permit?

I go into vacant homes and HUD homes, and am sometimes in some not nice areas. I like to rely on karma, but he gets nervous.

7. I guess, after 10 years...this whole part of the state is the same to me.
I can't tell the difference between Pleasantridge, Warren, Ann Arbor, Detroit...it's all the same. I spent a lot of time (medically sadly) in Ann Arbor and I've never seen any real difference. SE MI is SE MI.

10. I guess I'm cacooned then somehow. I lived in NYC for 10 years...

and Ann Arbor is like a miniature NY to me but more friendly. My neighbors came over with cookies yesterday to welcome me to the neighborhood and the neighbors on the other side are a lesbian couple. There's a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's within a couple of miles of me... and lot of great restaurants downtown which is just a few miles from me.

I'm sorry you saw a less pleasant side of it. I'm really pleasantly surprised by this community.

growing up in Northern New York...I liked it a lot better. I also miss Wisconsin. Yeah, I just got back from Trader Joe's. We have them here too.

On edit: I said 10 in the last post. We moved here February 20th, 1982...wow time has flown. I've lived in SCS for about 10 years. Sorry about that. :hi:

:)

I lived in Saratoga County in upstate New York for seven years after moving from Manhattan, and it just was never my cup of tea. My Hillary Clinton for Senator sign disappeared too many times for my comfort.

And they wouldn't call school. The buses would be delayed for two hours and there would be a foot and a half of snow on the ground. :hi:

21. It's really close for me.
I went from there to Papa Joe's at Woodward & 14 Mile. That store is great, but it's expensive. When Westborn was closed after one of the construction guys got fire retardant all over the stock last month, I went to Papa Joe's. I hadn't been there in a long time and had forgotten what a great store it is. Now I'm going there instead of Westborn.

14. Hi, MrsG
I can't wait until it's over already -- I'm so sick of the hype. I have to fly out of Metro to Atlanta next Monday, too, though, so it's not going to be a picnic. I'm planning to get to the airport three hours before my flight, to play it safe.

20. I'll be almost in Atlanta by then
My flight leaves at about 1:30. Security is going to be a zoo. I'm going to have Dave drop me and someone else I work with off so I don't have to park. Drop-off is going to be crazy. The paper last week said it's going to be like Thanksgiving and Christmas combined.

I had to fly to L.A. the day after the All Star game and the huge plane was jampacked. We were delayed 45 minutes so all the luggage cheats could check the bags they were trying to carry on.

42. Detroit: The Paris of the Southeastern Corner of Lower Michigan
I used to have a T-shirt that said that.

Born in Royal Oak, close to Woodward Avenue, and I still have many relatives in northwest suburbs.

My brother went to U of M, and Ann Arbor is a cool town. The rest of Michigan is pretty unremarkable.

It is nice that they have Trader Joes; some civilization.

After I left California, I never thought I would see it again. Then it went national.
