Dammit, this is the WRONG night not to be able to sleep!
I have to get up in, oh, just about four and a half hours and drive 250 miles. The weather's supposed to be crappy, snow and ice and all that fun winter stuff.

I have to lay down the law to one of my customers, and tell them that from now on, they have to give me a check for 50% of the quoted price for any new projects before I'll start working on them. And that the balances will henceforth be C.O.D., not net 30 days.

They're going to bitch and complain, and then I'll invite them to find someone else to do the stuff that I do for them, if they think they can find someone else who knows their product, their customer base, and their market as well as I do. They'll cave in, but not without much mumbling and grumbling. I know the script; I've been through this with clients before...whenever they get a new marketing manager, or the owner's son or daughter comes in to the business, they always want to flex their muscles and "be creative." It's a ritual I've been through more times than I can remember.

Then I'll get to drive home in the snow and ice, another 250 miles.

Aye, well; if it was easy, they wouldn't call it work, would they? But still, it's a lousy night not to be able to sleep.

1. I am so sorry, my dear Redstone.....that you can't sleep......
And I'm selfishly glad for me that you can't!

Now I have you to keep me company, and that works for me!

And I have no plans any time soon to stop making you blush!

So there!

As long as you're up, why don't you mosey by my pic thread? I love to see it get kicked some more...

If you feel like it, of course!

:loveya:

6. OK, I saw the pix. They're good. I see you like that wharf... so go there
at all hours of the day and evening. Look at it from every angle, especially any angles you don't think anyone else would look at it from.

Details. Find the details, and extract them from the whole. Nobody need know that detail is part of that wharf.

You know what I'm telling you, right? Know that wharf like you know your kitchen, then you'll be able to read its moods, and the way it reacts to the moods of the sky and water, and you'll be able to tell people about it.

I'm going to try to get some sleep now. Remember what I told you.

3. Can you stay over after your meeting?
500 miles seems a lot to drive in one day in snow and ice with sleep deprivation.

4. Don't worry, I'll bail out to a hotel in a heartbeat if needed.
I'm too old to be as stupid as I was when I was young, which almost resulted in me not geting a chance to be old. And more than once.

Thanks for your concern, FS. I promise I won't be dumb.

10. Redstone, book a hotel room for tomorrow night.
Seriously. It'll be bad enough driving there. But the confrontation will wear you out. Don't even try to drive home in the dark. Just book a room and stay overnight.

12. there seems to be an unwritten law ...
Something along the lines of "the length of time it takes you to go to sleep will be directly proportional to the estimated stress of the next day", if it were to be written down! My sympathies, Redstone. I had to get up very early to teach a co-worker's morning class last week, and between trying to update the lecture notes (for the second time, since she suddenly decided to change the topic schedule); getting the overheads to print off; and stressing about whether I'd be able to handle it if the class got really argumentative -- I didn't get much sleep.

I kept telling myself that humans have evolved to do just fine with an occasional broken night (provided we can make up for lost time by napping later). (Speaking of which, I almost nodded off during someone's seminar that afternoon, but that's another story.)

Wishing you a safe drive ...
