Keepsake

We had our days, didn't we — sun-stained,
hand-rubbed, pieced and plighted in some massing tale
I'd just begun to see the pattern of.
But we were the birds, too, starving in the woods,
ravening up the crumbs we dropped behind
till we were utterly lost (there was that failed
love, a music box you couldn't fix and I
couldn't, our griefs jangling us, dividing).
Where did you go, wood nymph, your huge, hurt eyes
that saw too much, fluttering in the weeds? —
You always moved moth-wise, in sudden juttings, gusts,
exaltations, long self-banishing silence.
Come back to me sometimes. I wander now too,
am a shadow with you here in this other life.
