A girl in my class went OFF on repubs, last night, in her speech.
It was hi-freaking-larious! We had to do a fictitious "award acceptance speech," and hers was for winning the Republican nomination for senate. She went through her "platform," which included every nasty thing far right-wing repubs are characterized as doing- working for private interests, being hypocrites and gay-haters, undermining education, health care, being war-mongers, etc. It was sarcastic as hell and I was hoping like crazy that I didn't have to present next, because I was in tears, laughing by the time she finished. Have I mentioned that I freaking LOVE being back at college?!

1. It has its benefits, that's for sure!
Welcome back Lara (I've certainly been here long enough!)

How was the other audience reaction?

3. Shocked looks and laughter.
Primarily shocked looks. Most people pretended to win an Oscar or some kind of MVP award. She was the only one who opted to go "controversial," in a practice speech! I love her, already. We got partnered up the first night, so I knew she was a stalwart progressive, but I still didn't expect her scathing approach to the assignment. Perhaps it was a bit of blowback after yesterday's unfortunate political events.

6. Keep up the good work
All colleges tend to be progressive environments, but the college republicans a farirly noisy minority on the U's campus. Particularly the nutjob op-ed writers for the Daily. Darren Bernard is definetly trying to line up a gig as right-wing blowhard.

8. I'm sure there must've been a few irritated conservatives in class.
I really don't care. They poured the swill we're all swimming in. They can lay down and swallow it. My classmate also told me a group she's involved in got Al Franken to commit to an event in April. I'm definitely going to go to that.

4. Oh, I would've loved to be in the audience for that one!
I'm going to have fun with this class. Everyone has to be nice to me, because I'm older than all of them. That's my thinking, anyway.

I used to sit-in on a colleague's Speech class to "double-grade" the Students..they can be oh so effective, inventive, and lots of fun! Thanks for the story,Kiddo. How about some cake ?

10. I try to reserve it for more profound instances of expression,
though I'm admittedly not above using it. I feel it loses some of its potency if I throw it around haphazardly. :hi:

and I've no idea of her relationship status, but she's a cool gal!

13. Yeah. I used my speech as an opportunity to tell them
that if they didn't be nice to me, I'd fight 'em. They looked scared. Especially the boys. :P
