As I was walkin' over Kilgarra mountain
I met Colonel Pepper and his money he was counting
I drew forth my pistol and I rattled my saber
Saying "stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver"

Musha ringum duram da
Whack fol de daddy-o
Whack fol de daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar

The shining yellow coins did sure look bright and jolly
I took the money home and I gave it to my Molly
She vowed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil's in the women and they never can be easy

Musha ringum duram da
Whack fol de daddy-o
Whack fol de daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar

When I awoke between the hours of six and seven
Guards were standing 'round me in numbers odd and even
I flew to my pistols, but alas I was mistaken
I fired off my pistols and a prisoner was taken

Musha ringum duram da
Whack fol de daddy-o
Whack fol de daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar

They put me in jail without a judge or jury
For robbing Colonel Pepper in the morning so early
They didn't take my fist so I knocked down the sentry
And I bid a long farewell to that cold penitentiary

Musha ringum duram da
Whack fol de daddy-o
Whack fol de daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar

Some take delight in fishing and rowin'
Others take delight in carriage a-rollin'
I take delight in the juice of the barley
Courting pretty women in the morning so early

1. Hmph (*mutters about bloody bastardized American versions...
of Irish folk songs*)

As I was going over the far famed Kerry mountains
I met with Captain Farrell, and his money he was counting.
I first produced my pistol, and I then produced my rapier.
Sayin' stand and deliver, for I am a bold deceiver,

Chorus:
musha ring dumma do damma da
whack for the daddy 'ol
whack for the daddy 'ol
there's whiskey in the jar

I counted out his money, and it made a pretty penny.
I put it in my pocket and I took it home to Jenny.
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me,
but the Devil take the women, for they never can be easy

I went into my chamber, all for to take a slumber,
I dreamt of gold and jewels and for sure it was no wonder.
But Jenny drew my charges and she filled them up with water,
Then sent for Captain Farrell to be ready for the slaughter.

T'was early in the morning, just before I rose to travel,
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise Captain Farrell.
I first produced my pistol, for she'd stolen away my rapier,
But I couldn't shoot the water so a prisoner I was taken.

Now there's some take delight in the carriages a-rollin',
And others take delight in the hurley and the bowlin'.
But I take delight in the juice of the barley,
And courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early

If anyone can aid me, t'is my brother in the army,
If I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney.
And if he'll go with me, we'll go roving in Kilkenny,
And I'm sure he'll treat me better than me darling sportling Jenny

************
Still, no matter which version, its a damn fine song :toast:

2. It all depends on who you learned it from.

My Irish granddad would differ with ya :P Granted he was two generations removed from the isle, but still

Who's straight off the boat, sings the version I posted... but, yeah, it likely just depends on what area of Ireland you're from.

4. Much like American folk tunes, Irish tunes (and Scottish for that matter)
differ greatly by region/county/dialect/what have you.

5. On a slightly different tangent --
What is it with Irish folk songs about robbing people (Whiskey in the Jar, Black Velvet Band, etc., etc.)?

Don't get me wrong. For the reocrd, I deeply love Irish folk tunes. They're great. I particularly dig rebel songs. But then, like your grandpappy, I'm only a second generation American.

6. It's not just Irish folk tunes that carry such themes.
It's pretty much universal. Irish ones just seem to involve getting liquored up first more often :P
