LOL. Suprise, suprise. Turns out that a guy in my class
who last week was ranting and raving about illegal immigrants, how they "leech off of hardworking Americans", "get a free pass", and "only take and contribute nothing" ...

...

...

Steals his neighbor's wireless internet!

:wtf:

Speaking of "taking" and "leeching off of hardworking Americans"...

...

I suppose he thinks it's okay because he's not an illegal immigrant.

5. To play devil's advocate for a second:
Stealing the neighbor's wireless doesn't harm the neighbor (unless you're hogging so much bandwidth that the whole system slows down).

It does technically harm the internet provider, because he isn't paying them for his own account.

Wireless is weird, anyway. If you put a bunch of lighting in your backyard, and your next-door neighbor finds there's a patch of his yard that is bright enough to read in, as a result, is he stealing your light? Or ripping off the power company for not putting in his own light?

7. While you are technically correct, I think the proper thing to do
would be to split the bill. When I get on my laptop, it always comes up that my neighbor's connection is available, but I wouldn't do that. I don't think it is right.

13. I've done it on rare occasions...
New apartment in an urban area, half the neighborhood has unsecured connections, blah blah blah. But I wouldn't do it regularly, regardless of ethics, but because I wouldn't want to rely on my neighbor's keeping the connection up, paying the bill, etc., for my access.

I think, actually, splitting the bill is a violation of the ISP's terms of service, so while it might be a nice thing to do....the proper thing, legally, would be getting your own connection.

8. once while waiting for my sister
I was reading by the light of her icicle lights.

Actually now that my parking lot neighbor has put in these floodlights I no longer turn on my porchlight when I let the dogs out because my whole back yard is lit up anyway.

9. However it poses a security risk. That jack ass might be able to
tap into the neighbor's computer. Also, he does not have permission to use his neighbor's service or to be on his network. So I guess if someone has a "whole in the fence" and let's light through to the neighbor, well the neighbor knows that's happening. So it's different, so there. :nopity:

11. But like you said, it can wreck his bandwith
And I would compare it to stealing cable.

You're ripping off your neighbors. Plus, depending on what types of sites he visits, he might be compromising the safety of his neighbor's computer.

I don't see it like using light from a light that shines from your neighbor's yard into yours.

14. Not so much the safety of the computer...
I'm unaware of viruses (etc.) that can enter a computer on a network via the actions of another computer that's simply using the same network (assuming he's just accessing the Internet and not the computer -- that goes from bandwidth theft to hacking. (I could be wrong here.)

IT does open the neighbor to, say, a nastygram from the RIAA if there's a lot of peer-to-peer stuff going across a connection in his name.

I maintain that you're not stealing cable from your neighbors, assuming your theft thereof doesn't negatively affect their ability to watch -- you're stealing from the cable company. It's still theft, but with a different victim.

20. You're stealing from your neighbor, because they pay and you do not
The only reason someone would be able to steal cable is because someone else is paying for it.

23. Maybe not, but much closer to stealing than copyright infringement is
Because bandwidth is limited. Sooner or later, he's going to use it while the neighbor is making a download, and then the neighbor's download will be slower than s/he paid it to be.

Edited on Tue Jan-31-06 05:07 PM by JVS
Why should I get a phone line and all that stuff if others will provide wireless for me?

15. But, if people don't want their wireless stolen, they need to encrypt it
This is a pretty gray area, about the wireless, since so many people DO give their wireless away. We don't know that the neighbor isn't maybe intending to give his wireless away.

But, it does sound like the typical republican hypocrite that behavior is judged by the color of the person doing it; not by the behavior itself.

21. Here's my point: How are illegal immigrants leaching off society
when they pay taxes just like you and I do.

Its the same kind of logic.

Yeah, its debatable whether using someone else's network without their knowledge or consent is stealing.

But it just struck me as odd that this guy, who apparently had such a firm grasp on earning your own way and such a clear-cut view of morality, had no problem using something he didn't have to pay for.

24. Ask him if he's paid for all the music on his IPod...
As for the immigrants, I'm guessing he will claim that immigrants don't pay taxes, they just come here to get on welfare and get free school and health care and then steal our car stereos... (That's what he'll say, not me.)
