Look out SoCal! Here I come!
Heading to LA/Santa Barbara for job interviews!

I have Saturday all to myself! I'll be in the Santa Barbara area, but I'd like to meet some LA DUers, especially the infamous ZombyWoof!

1. Check out Ojai. That's where I grew up. It's about 17 miles inland
from Ventura, right over the hill from SB. VERY cool place.

Did you see "LA Story" yet? ;)

4. OMG, I was in Ojai
last Saturday!

It was dark, so I didn't get to see much, but it looked like a cute little town.

17. It's beautiful. Good vibe, too.
they used the Ojai valley as the mythical valley of Shangrila during the filming of the movie "Lost Horizon" in the 30's.

3. I hope you take housing availability into account in your job search
I would suggest you factor into your choice of job the nearness of the physical premises in which you intend to live. After living thirty-six years in southern California, I've finally had it with the traffic. Today, I took a freeway trip to the dentist in the middle of the day and was even later than the potential late arrival I had already factored into my departure time. The freeways are getting undriveable and totally unreliable. If I were you, I would above all try to find housing near your job, so that you can avoid the freeways as much as possible. I think it will make a big difference in your quality of life. And if you're used to public transportation where you come from, forget it.

6. You are so right. I told my wife that there is no way in hell that I
am going to retire in Southern California. I've got quite a few years to go, but I cannot see putting up with this traffic and crowded freeways any longer than I have to.

9. Thanks for the advice
Is 101 (Ventura Freeway) particularly bad? I'm interviewing out in the Ventura County/Santa Barbara area.

20. It can get bad in Santa Barbara
I'm from LA but i go to school in SB and the traffic gets on my nerves here. I'm from LA for God's sake! However, the drivers aren't particularly psychotic here which is good.

12. There is absolutely no amount of money that could get me to
live / work in the LA area.

Way, WAY to many people, and all of them driving all at once, all the time.

Ditto the Silicon Valley up north. Damn if I'd spend my life planning my movements around the traffic levels. What a waste of precius time.

Now, Santa Cruz or Bishop or Eureka...those are some California places I could live.

14. I have'nt posted much in the past few months
but I am still here.

Anyway, I am not at all familiar with you, but I do live in Santa Barbara. I also just moved 3 weeks ago. Only six miles away from where we were. We almost moved to Ventura because you get more for your money down there. And I also like it there. But luckily it worked out so that we did not have to move south of where my husband works. The traffic on the 101 north in the A.M. is bad. And reverse in the P.M..

I hope that you can spend the time drivivng around to look for for rent signs. Try not to go thru a rental company as I have just dealt with several in ventura and sb and found them to be unhelpful and not very reliable.

Welcome to SoCal. Plan on spending 1/3 of your income on housing.

Well, I just went grocery shopping and I live by the beach, so if you would like to meet up, send me a pm.

Good luck on your job interviews.

Lilyhoney
