A Bulletin Board System, like a pre-Internet network. One phone line to the SystemOperator's computer, and one user at a time calling in.

43. If the question had been where did I meet my INsignificant other...
I was the Sysop(ette) and we did have a child of the union who is a terrific child, a senior in college.
Unfortunately, he was abusive and even a marriage counselor could not help.

45. Met my wife on a BBS
She wasn't a SYSOP, though. It was the first commercial BBS in Toronto.

The same year this new 'internet' thing came out.

People kept telling me it wouldn't last. The internet, that is, not my relationship with my wife.

52. If I knew then what I know now,
a local SysOp started a multi-line for-pay BBS, and asked me if I wanted to invest some start-up capital. I declined, thinking "who would pay for something when we do it for free?"

His little 8 modem set-up became Voyager Internet Services. http://home.voyager.net

13. At a video game company
We were both testers and he hung out with the guy I had a crush on and ate lunch with all the time and he always tagged along. 2 years later I was in a horrible car accident and lost a lot of my friends because they couldn't deal with me being in a wheelchair (I can walk again, now), but he kept talking to me and listening to me and ended up being the best man I've ever known. He saw me through my (hopefully) worst times, and every night when I fall asleep beside him I'm happy to have found him.

God, that's the sappiest thing I've ever said.

23. I saw her across the room. The prof announced the class would break into
groups the next day for a project, so I sat next to her, and casually asked if she'd like to be in my group.

Later, when I talked to her, I asked her out immediately (which was something I didn't do) and she starting telling me all about her boyfriend.

I had to wait through two other boyfriends, and stayed on as a friend, but eventually she came home with me.

We're past 20 years, and I love her enormmously.

Here she is when we were young, in the first months of our relationship. She has the finest heart I can imagine.

37. He answered my ad
I wish I were kidding. My boss at the time had met her husband through an ad; she bullied me till I did it, too. I hated dating and would most likely still be single if I hadn't taken the risk.

DH and I met on a Tuesday night after talking on the phone every night for a week (and my very real fear that we'd meet and there'd be nothing there.) We went out again Thursday night the same week, were married 10 months later, and have been together ever since.

49. Same Here
I ran an ad in the local free paper a year after dumping my ex. Our first date lasted four days. That was over 14 years ago.

I ran the ad because such horrible, horrible things were hitting on me. I figure if Fate wanted me to date again, I'd take things into my own hands. I was terribly embarassed about the ad, so of course it was the Ad of The Week and was read on the air every day for a week. I got hundreds of responses. Loved One was caller #2, and the oddest thing was is that he worked about a block from where I lived at the time, but since I walked home on a different street, I'd never seen him (otherwise I'd been on him like white on rice!).

And, strangely enough, he knew my best friend, had dated a friend of hers who I knew as well, was going to a party after our first meeting at my neighbor's house-- yet we had never met.

We clicked immediately on the phone, and I broke the first rule of blind dating-- Always meet the date at a public place. I let him pick me up at my house, and was immensely relieved to see he was cute-- unlike some of the other very pleasant people I'd met that way.

We were married 18 months later, in 1990, and my personal ad, framed by his reply letter, was the cover of our wedding invitation.

93. We Knew Lots Of The Same People
He went to high school and college with my brother; we both traveled in the same arty-farty-band circle; hell, we even vaguely resemble eachother, but without that ad I was so embarassed about, I never would have met him! I'm ultra-super-mega cautious about meeting unknown quantities, but after talking on the phone for 8 hours straight ... well, as I said, our first date lasted four days and we really haven't been apart since.

and she called to request Chris DeBurgh's LADY IN RED. I asked her if she was a lady in red. She said that she had red hair. I then asked her if she had painted toenails. She said yes; and she had painted finger nails, too. I asked her if they were painted red. She said yes. The rest is history.

January 20, 1994 I was living in Canoga Park, CA and had been displaced from my apartment by the Northridge Quake. Still together and life is good and getting better.

later, we did improv together

now, we have two and a half kids, she's a Yoga Teacher and I'm a rented brain for the Marine Corps

I have a friend that has the best story of this type:

She was a bridesmaid at a wedding in the DC area. She was living in Iowa at the time and had to fly here to participate. She had her photo taken, as is the custom, with a Groomsman as she was walking down the aisle. A subsequent girlfriend of the Groomsman, in DC, saw this wedding photo at the Groomsman's place, asked who the woman was, and proceeded to fantasize that my friend was the Groomsman's secret lover. The girlfriend then started making threatening phone calls to my friend in Iowa. My Iowa friend eventually figured out who was making these calls and called the Groomsman, who had jettisoned the girlfriend, enraging her even more. My Friend and the Groomsman had to talk on the phone to straighten this problem out. these phone calls eventually blossomed into, ahhhh love. Eventually, my Friend married the Groomsman, but did this stop the crazy ex-girlfriend, no. The Crazy girlfriend was hauled into court, the judge was looking over her phone bill and asked, what does this little printed smiley face mean, next to the phone number, the crazy ex answered, "I put her on my Friends and Family Plan." Eventually, the crazy ex tried to hire two teenagers to kill my Friend, the teens went immediately to the police and the crazy ex was moved from probation and psych care to prison, where she sits to this day......

Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 04:51 PM by Gargoyle
She was working behind the counter, I was buying a soda and she was being bugged by this weirdo that lived in her building. He kept asking her out and she kept saying no. I asked her to help me at the back of the store. I told her that I would ask her out and she should say yes and that way the creep would get the hint and leave her alone. I asked her out to a movie, she accepted and creepo took off giving me a dirty look on the way out. When it was closing time I was there, she asked me what was doing there, I said we have a date and I'm a man of my word, so I took her to see Superman. Two weeks later I asked her to marry me, that was 26 years ago.

119. In a Cave.
more or less.

I was heavily involved in a caving group, and was camp cook for a special expedition at Mammoth Cave, involving a group from Michigan State University. Several of the participants ultimately became actively involved with the group I was in and my husband was one of them, and we became friends over a period of years. I think we had been friends for about 5or 6 years when we finally went out on our first date.

I was married when we first met, then divorced and after my divorce we decided to just go out...still together after 23 years of dating and marriage and a 21 year old daughter.

BASIC has never resulted in sex. ever. Girls flock to Ruby. Ruby is sex. In a OOP way.

I found my true love in 10th grade algebra. We both missed the same day and got put in a small room to take the test we missed. I noticed she was looking at my test. After I was done with the test I erased my name and wrote in hers. I slid the test over to her and grabbed hers. 11 years later.. and she still sucks at math.
