1. Rain Man
although Dustin Hoffman was, of course, lots better. Hoffman went so far as to study with people with autism before tackling the role!

This had to be the highlight of his acting career and why he wasn't nominated for an Oscar is beyond me

8. No... Ohhhh look at me I'm Tom Cruise acting like a samurai...ohh
look at me I'm Tom Cruise acting like a super spy....ohhhh look at me I'm Tom Cruise acting like a ______ <- fill in the blank with whatever kind of person/role he's supposed to be/or is playing.

Seriously one of the most overrated actors in history and I never thought he was all that good looking - merely passable.

15. His best acting was in
Born on the 4th of July, Rainman and Cocktail (that I've seen). But he still was not outstanding as compared to some really great actors. Overall I think he is highly overrated.

23. By whose standards? He's gotten critical acclaim and industry
praise for many roles. He's also been a reliable vehicle for other actors to win or be nominated for Oscars costarring with him, which suggests that he works well with other actors. He's frequently praised by other actors for his professionalism and talent, as well (obviously not in his recent personal life, but on movie sets).

But if you don't like him, you don't.

From IMDB (just beause the historian in me likes research and I'm bored at work):

Nominated for Oscars in Magnolia, Born on the Fourth of July, and Jerry Maguire.

Won Golden Globes for those three films, and was nominated for Risky Business, The Last Samurai, and A Few Good Men.

He's been in other films where co-stars have won or been nominated, as well. The Color of Money, Rain Man.

He's won a lot of random film critic and festival awards, too.

For comparison, Johnny Depp, who most agree is a good actor and who has been in a lot of the same types of films as Cruise (they are often considered for the same roles), has two Oscar nominations and six Golden Globe nominations--no wins. And he's been in more films than Cruise. Although Depp seems to be rising and Cruise falling.

25. Nope
His stock in trade seems to be standing there with his mouth hanging open while others act around him. They get oscars (Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, Cuba Gooding Jr.) although occasionally he will squeak or shriek and prove he doesn't deserve one.
