Tom Cruise was good enough for Stanley Kubrick!
Look at all these actors who worked for SK:

Kirk Douglas
Laurence Olivier
Charles Laughton
Peter Ustinov
James Mason
Shelley Winters
George C Scott
Peter Sellers
James Earl Jones
Malcolm McDowell
Jack Nicholson

If you don't care for his personal life, fine. But enough of this juvenile bullshit regarding Cruise's acting...

1. I think Eyes Wide Shut was a big "Fuck You"sendoff to the world
But I could be wrong

68 takes to walk across a room and open a door for one actor.

2. As one of the 8 people who actually saw that movie
I wish to say it sucked out loud. Sucked royally. Sucked great big monkey balls.

I didn't care for it.

4. But sometimes juvenile bullshit is fun.
Necessary, even.

Truth be told I do think he's done some good work, and I do like his movies. I think that qualifies me as borderline retarded to some people, but hey... I like what I like!

5. Tom Cruise *can* be a good actor
And he knows how to market himself...or at least did...

He was very good in Born on the 4th of July, Interview With the Vampire and a few others...

8. Kubrick had started work on "A.I." when he died. Spielberg took
over. They should BOTH be ashamed. What a stupid fucking movie.

And I love most of the film by both Kubrick and Spielberg.

"Paths of Glory" and "Saving Private Ryan" are two of the best (anti)-war films ever made.

11. I thought it was pretty good
No way it came close to touching some of Kubrick's past works but it totally stood above 90% of the schlock that gets released in theaters.

13. I think "Eyes Wide Shut" is a load of crap. Easily Kubrick's worst.
EASILY.

And Tom Cruise is a great actor...if you want to see Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise. This guy isn't going to be doing "Hamlet" anytime soon.

14. Dude...just because hes worked with Kubrick, doesn't make him a good actor
Your logic is horribly flawed, the only thing that makes him a good actor is his acting...which unfortunately sucks a big one.

16. mmm
He actually wasn't bad in Minority Report. I keep meaning to see Eyes Wide Shut. Generally, though, I thought Nicole Kidman had the acting talent in that pairing.

17. My opinion of Tom Cruise's acting has nothing to do with his personal life
I've enjoyed some of his movies - Minority Report comes to mind - but I've never mistaken him for anything other than a one-note actor. He plays essentially the same character (Tom Cruise) in everything he does. There are plenty of actors who do that (our present governator for example).

To me, a great actor is someone who makes you forget who the actor is playing the part and simply becomes the person they're playing. Cruise has never done that for me.

I find Russell Crowe obnoxious and self-centered but I thought his acting in A Beautiful Mind was incredible. I don't judge a person's work by what I think of them personally and I do give credit where credit is due.

Along the same veins, just because someone is an established and talented director doesn't mean every film they do is going to be fabulous. They all have a dud in them somewhere. I never saw Eyes Wide Shut so I can't comment on the film but from what I've heard of it, that may be Kubrick's mulligan.

20. I adore Kubrick, and have seen all of his movies
several time and won't get tired of seeing them again. He was a maniac genius of filmmaking, and he's truely missed.

I never saw 'Eyes Wide Shut.' And I don't think I'll ever watch it. Not because of Tom Cruise, I just think Kubrick took the wrong story here and turned it into a wrong movie.

I've seen 'War of the Worlds' yesterday and am still shaking my head. Not because of Tom Cruise but Spielberg. That movie was just bad. Cruise had only some little acting to do in it (run, scream, pant.)

But I loved 'The Last Samurai' and I think Cruise did a wonderful job in it.

Still, I'm not sure why Kubrick even chose Cruise for a movie like that.
