I saw "Murkan Eye-DULL" last night for the first time... |
|
We are SO fucked, if *THIS* bullshit is what the Murkan Sheeple know more about than their congress-critters!
At the Suds-n-Spin, trying not to pay attention (I was reading the new ish of "Skeptical Inquirer") but everyone else in the place was GLUED to the screen.
Bread and Circuses.

6. I KNEW I was keeping this particular "Get your WAR on" strip... |
|
...for a reason...
"'East Coast elitist'? Fuck it, sure-is that what you call it? Fine. All I know is I'm from New York City. I can actually think on my feet, I can string two fuckin' sentences together without notes, and I could answer some motherfuckers' question about a war without just spitting out eleven different permutations of the same goddamn 'goo-gah freedom' phrase! So SUE me-that makes me elitist? GOOD! if 'elitist' just means 'not the dumbest motherfucker in the room', I'll be an elitist!"
Next you'll be admonishing me for "costing us VOTES". Sorry I dissed your "guilty pleasure" there.

7. I love the slinging around of "elitist" - it says more about the sayer |
|
than about the person being called it.
And I love your rant!
I figure when someone calls me an elitist, they can do that only because they realize that what I am ranting against IS substandard - it is to say, "Oh, you just don't like the base, artless, common things that I adore."
If they didn't feel that their own tastes were substandard, they wouldn't sling around the word "elitist" - they'd just say "don't be such a prick," or "you might not like it, but I do" or "that's just your opinion" or come up with some way to defend/argue their position.
But no, the use of the term "elitist" bespeaks that the one saying it DOES know that their tastes are base and common, and that they might even feel some inner turmoil about it, and that maybe they wish they knew better.

9. I was in your spot last year, I detest American Idol |
|
Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 11:27 AM by new_beawr
I was put on ignore by several fellow DUers because of my own despising of American Idol. Was excoriated and now nobody likes me.....boo hoo hoo.
I'm just watching from the sidelines this year, that's all.....
BTW, My homes over the last 20 years have been NY and DC, so I am another East Coast Elitist - in a big way.....
And how did you derive me calling YOU elitist from my post, I was just settling in for the slugfest. Man, you're itching for a fight, aren't you?

5. Jawn you actually caught the best part |
|
The "competition" is nothing. The best part is seeing really horrible singers. I don't personally enjoy watching dreams getting crushed (regardless of how reality based they were to start with) but this is the best part of the show.
From now on it becomes a soap opera. Yes we watch it in my house. I have caught up on my reading while it is on.
"How Soccer Explains the World" by Franklin Foer-I don't know that I agree that there really is a correlation between sports and globalization but I am learning a lot about styles of soccer and the story of the clubs and the business and the personalities.

10. i think the embarrassing thing about american idol |
|
is that they purposely put ugly untalented people on the air for the specific purpose of humiliating them...i have only watched portions of the show a couple of times...but every time i see a segment...it's some poor sap who just can't sing at all...at all...not even an imitation of a vocalist...and the judges react by rolling their eyes etc...then they proceed to humiliate the ringer (er singer) by telling them how worthless they are...a very strange show...

20. Rudeness, insensitivity, cruelty, arrogance |
|
(etc, etc) -- and taking pleasure in these. (Now, mind you, I have never seen more than the odd promo -- where they seem to positively glory in these things.)
Gee, what's not to like?
And why not foist off practitioners of these "virtues" as "celebrities" and "stars".
And why not broadcast all this to the masses -- so that they too can learn -- and emulate... Rudeness, insensitivity, cruelty and arrogance (etc) -- and taking pleasure in it.
Of course, there are any number of teevee shows that routinely practice all of these "virtues" -- and many more of the same ilk (intolerance, ignorance, small-mindedness, narrow-mindedness, to name a few.).
(Gee, what a co-inky-dink.)
And there can be no innocent bystanders in this battle for our culture.
