Porn at work is BAD- My company made sure everyone knows.
We had the "great porn crack down" yesterday. Out of the 300 staff employees 100 had pornographic images in their e-mail accounts. The minimum punishment was a two day unpaid suspension. The most severe was termination. The guys that got a two day had received pornography and failed to delete it. I don't know what the guy that was fired did but it must have been a severe violation.
The problem was so widespread they had to stagger the suspensions. Some of the interesting things I found out about our company perverts. Thumping a bible at work does not make you immune from looking at porn. Three of those sent out were woman. (I didn't think women looked at porn) Nobody in the IT department was suspended. (go figure)
The most surprising thing was I DIDN'T get in trouble! I have never sent any images and when I do get one it is quickly deleted. (I don't need to see that crap at work)

3. Did they send you images so you know what porn is?
That would be nice.
The IT guys are smart enough to cover their tracks.

5. The IT guys were the ones looking for the porn

in the servers and hard drives. They weren't about to let themselves be terminated.

8. Anybody check the IT guys' bags
before they left yesterday? Bet there were some external drives with new material going home.

But seriously, I wonder if the timing on the crackdown has anything to do with that virus that executes at the beginning of each month. It comes hidden in porn graphic attachments.

4. what if it was sent in spam?
that doesn't seem fair, in that case. Or was it stuff people deliberately sent?

I would assume most workplaces have some kind of filter ( ha ha) to get rid of that stuff.

29. That's what I'm saying.
I was getting quite a bit of it as spam in my home account...looks like the filter works so it's not that bad. Still...I don't always go out of my way to delete my spam because I generally don't delete emails, just archive them.

10. My agency's CIO got fired for pR0n on his laptop
escorted right out the door, no appeals, no nothing.

Unfortunately, he walked two blocks down the road and got the SAME job at another state agency, for more pay and less responsibility. Government work sucks.

26. I didn't--seems like so much of the time in gov't work
people that do nothing get highly paid job, with benefits.

People that work a lot are the part-timers.

But I've known of some people like this guy. THey must have stars in their crowns--or know where the bodies are buried.

Parts of the country with more churches per capita also tend to have more strip clubs per capita. Sexuality is a very dangerous element of the human condition to try to suppress.

16. WTF is wrong with people?
I can see how wasting company time is a bad thang - but porn specifically? I smell a witch hunt.

And, yes, women do enjoy porn - those of us in the industry (well, some of us) have tried to make it more female friendly.

Crap? I'd rather get a dirty picture in my inbox than one of those dumb jokes everyone feels required to pass on. Now, that's real crap.

Edited on Fri Feb-03-06 08:57 AM by Benfea
…how would your IT guys know if that email wasn't the sort of unsolicited spam that gets sent out to everyone and their grandmother (literally)?

I admit that I sometimes look at things I shouldn't at work (mostly message boards like this or gaming sites), but porn at work? That's beyond the pale, and I can't understand why people would do that. Get your jollies on your own time.

28. I wasn't part of the "porn-ring" so I don't know.
I don't really like being at work to begin with so I don't try to go out of my way to have work buddies. I do my job and am easy to get along with. Whenever anybody crosses the work/personal line I clam up. No I don't really care about your life co-workers, I just want a paycheck.

25. I'm a woman and I like porn.
I don't think I like the same kind of porn as most guys, but I do like seeing some of the more soft-core stuff sometimes. And I like reading erotic novels.

I don't look at porn at work, though. That's just asking for trouble.

30. But Porn on a laptop could be home use or someone else using
I used to worry, during the period that our home computer was on the fritz and we didn't have DSL, that my SO would use my laptop to look at porn via wireless at home after I went to bed (which was fine by me) but that it would stay on the laptop I brought home to do work (not fine). I always tried to clear the caches, but wasn't ever sure I did a thorough enough job of it.

For the benefit of our IT guys, should they be reading DU: I am not the one looking at pictures/videos of Asian stewardesses getting spanked....

33. If the machine is owned by your employer, don't use it for pR0n
technically, it is their property, and you should only be using it for work-related purposes. That's the only way to be safe these days.

36. Thanks - have made it clear to the SO that I could get in trouble
Not that I'm sure he ever used it for that, but I am really paranoid!!! Fortunately, we now have DSL at home, so there's no interest in the company laptop's wireless connection.

38. I can't believe people were careless enough to...oh, hell. Yes, I can.
I actually encountered a survey with a couple of thousand people a few years ago in which a shocking number of people admitted that they hadn't just looked at porn at work, engaged in sexual activities while technically still "at work" (as in, supposed to be in the office, but already gone/in the parking lot or something taking an extended break) but actually had sexual intercouse in their workplaces. As in, the actual building in which they were gainfully employed. How many? Four in ten. Four in--!! People are stupid. And inappropriate.
