Things you should never buy the expensive kind of: |
|
Drinking glasses: They're made of GLASS. They're going to break. Might as well not let your heart get broken along with them because they were expensive.
OK, your turn.

15. I can't believe you have stuff put away for later... |
|
You never know if there is going to be a later. Please get those glasses out and use them well. My grandmother always told us never to save the nice china for nice because that nice time will never come. My mom has tea towels no one is allowed to use. Why? She spent a buck each for them, but you can't use them? RIDICULOUS. There is nothing in this apartment that we don't use. Maybe it's the mortality I've been facing lately, but I think that you should enjoy everything you have while you're here to use it. Duckie

|
I don't know if I am allowed to do this, address another personally on a thread. I will do the decent thing and go read the rules again. But hey LeftyMom. I don't know if you have boys or girls. But I buy my son only converse high tops. Best money I have ever spent on kid clothes! You can buy big and they don't hinder running as they are very flexible. They last till they grow out of them. I am talking at least nine months! My daughter gets the cheaps.

43. I get expensive shoes, but don't pay full price. |
|
I have three boys. I take them to the store, measure their feet, try on some brands and styles that I like and then order their shoes new on Ebay for much less than in the store. I got my three year old Vans for $14 and he has been wearing them since the August. The twins are still in their first pair of walkers so we haven't gotten them a real pair of shoes yet. We really can't afford to pay full price for all of them to wear nice shoes, but they all have flat feet like me. A lot of store will give us a twin discount for the babies, but not much.
Welcome to DU!

I like liquid detergent and buy Sun or Par. It all works the same. If I have stains, etc., there are ways to remove them without spending a lot of money on those laundry products with empty promises.

I have a small collection of expensive ones, but I wear the $10 ones with pride. My favorite has the "glow" effect at night so I can see the hands in the dark. If I'm out and accidentally lose one or break one, I'm not out several hundred dollars for the ones that are irreplacable.
As far as a "someday" bit, many of the expensive ones need batteries to work, anyhow, but since I buy them for their appearance, they can stay unworn and non-working!

17. shampoo, conditioner, etc... |
|
I don't buy the uber-cheap kind, but neither do I understand why people will shell out $15+ for a bottle of SHAMPOO. Silly.
Pens - My dad looooves expensive pens - Mont Blanc, etc - and I have a nice one or two I received as graduation presents, I usually use low-cost (preferably non-leaky, though) pens.
I used to buy expensive sunglasses, but now I think trendy accessories and expensive doo-dads are stupid. The sunglasses need to be good quality to do their job, but come on - $150? $200? Silly.

28. Batteries, Mascara, "Tupperware" |
|
Grocery store batteries last just as long as the name brand and are way cheaper. (same for light bulbs)
I prefer cheap mascara. All the super lash thickeners in the department store brands just leave you with clumps. Besides, you should throw out mascara every couple months so the cost of the expensive stuff really could add up. (my favorite = Maybelline Unstoppable)
Buy fake "tupperware". Eventually something red always ruins it, so why bother with the good stuff. Everyone I know with real Tupperware is strangely protective of it.

40. There was an online article I read the other day |
|
about home decorating. It was also a quiz--see if you can spot the cheap decorating elements from the expensive or high end pieces. The author of the article was fawning and snooty by my standards, and gushed over a $2000 coffee table, for example. I have been "poor" most of my life, and the thought of a $2000 coffee table, and for anything over $300 in that room they showed was repulsive. I suppose I would pay a little more to get the right bed frame, or a couch that I was in love with, but decorating a single room on $50,000 is more than ridiculous, it's completely unnecessary by my standards.
Twenty five years ago, I used to use milk crates for storage and bookcases. Then they became chic, and started to cost like $15 or more for one milk crate! Then we used to use glass bricks or cement bricks and plain wood for shelving, and then they started to charge godawful amounts of money for that stuff! These "decorators" will take something we poor people use as a necessity and turn it into something that we would never pay outrageous amounts for!
Nowadays, the only expensive thing I want is a good TV, and if it means using a cardtable to put it on, so be it! I won't be spending more on a base for it than I did for the TV itself!! (I have that TV all picked out already--it's $1600, and is a Panasonic 42" plasma. I just have to wait to afford it!!)
