BAKERSFIELD - He may be an “Okie from Muskogee,” but Merle Haggard is now a part of the streets of Bakersfield.

The Bakersfield City Planning Commission voted Thursday night to approve re-naming a portion of S Street to Merle Haggard Way.

“Merle is only one of two members of the Country Music Hall of fame actually born in California,” said Bill Murray. “He along with many others including Buck Owens, are accredited with changing country music industry with the still popular Bakersfield sound.”

The portion of street, between Truxtun Avenue and the Amtrak Station will get the name change in May.

3. Matthew Shepard...I think Snowy Mountain View Rd. should be named
after him as a reminder of how awful hatred can become.
